I strongly believe that Apple is aware of this disaster. But this is not the real issue. I think that Mountain Lion is far from being finished product even if we disregard something like this. Personally I will wait for 10.8.2 at least. Currently I mitigated damage by downgrading to Lion, after all it's not a big difference, except Lion works 🙂

I've had the disastrous freezing issue and think I might have found the culprit on mine at least. I turned off Photostream, which had a slew of errors in Console. Also I had backup software running (CrashPlan) and it seems to have been running into some I/O issues, but only when it's running. I contacted them about that.

But when it crashes your best bet is to look at the Console log for when it crapped out.

Hi. I'm having the same problem. I have an IMac circa late 2007. It's freezing up too. So far, it's happened three or four times since I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion on July 31st. Thankfully, it hasn't frozen more than that, so I'm crossing my fingers. But I have some important documents to work on and I guess I'm going to have to save every minute or so in case I lose some of it to a crash.

I do have questions though: Does forcing the computer to shut down by holding the power button mess up any of the software or the hard disk in general? Should I run Disk Utility or some other program after every time I force the computer to shut down?

Also, someone said that it's possible, after your computer freezes and you reboot, to have a window display asking to send info of the crash report to Apple. I haven't seen such a window. Is there a way to activate it?

Thanks.

I haven't seen any of those crash report windows myself . The only way that I'm aware of is to restart it the same way you've been doing it . That's what Apple has told me every time I've been on the phone with them . Read my earlier post about this issue being sent to the engineers as of 3 hours ago . They are aware of it NOW if they weren't already .

VERY interesting about 1 Password there - I'd suggest those of us who have 1Password installed follow those instructions and see if it helps.

Also v interesting what you say, Mirsky, about your 2007 iMac - the frequency of your crashes sounds v similar to mine and not as frequent as some other people's here.

There might perhaps be several different issues here...

Permission repair was of not help in my case and I did not have the Transmit. This is a problem, directly, with the video drivers and Nvidia cards in the machines.

I have a solution, the same that was used when Lion after 10.7.2 had a problem, is to disable the Nvidia graphics until there is a fix. There is a program called "gfxCardStatus" which will allow you to lock the machine into the integrated graphics.

Since I switched to that I've had no crashes. This is for certain not a long term solution as only using the integrated card is limiting.

Same issue here. My MBP early 2011 suddenly freezing about 5 times since upgraded to Mountain Lion even only Safari and Finder opened and 3 times losing stuff I working on Photoshop and Illustrator. I've run full Onyx automation module for Mountain Lion and no effect, it freezing 3 times in 2 hours. Now running Time Machine restore to the latest stable Lion backup and currently 8 hours remaining. What a waste.
