I am having a similar problem, but not with a spinning beachball - I have a cursor I can move around, but nothing I click on works, I can't switch between programs, and Force Quit combination on the keyboard doesn't work either.

I have to restart the machine. This has happened 4 times since I installed Mountain Lion a week ago. It did not happen before.

When it has happened, I have had Safari open and been doing stuff in Safari. If video is playing, I can still hear the video and watch it - just not click on anything. I don't know if that is related or just a coincidence.

My harddrive is brand new as it was recently replaced by the Apple Store, after a HD failure.

Anyone else with this since the Mountain Lion update?

I have similar problems.

I used this upgrade to also install a new drive (Samsung SSD).

Unfortunately ML doesn't allow me todo that. USB tricks simply don't work.

So I upgraded the old HDD with ML leading to the problems described above. Beachball's, creating a new folder, not possible, access MBP through network, hmm, you can login but that is about it.
Cloned this HHD to the new SSD and hoped I could at least reinstall ML on the SSD when it was build into the MBP. Unfortunately none of these drives work.Mountain Lion can be reinstalled nor is it possible to clean install ML. I lost count but it looks like I have to reinstall the old drive again and see if that work.s

Tried to reinstall Snow Leopard but that option is blocked leaving me with a computer that cannot not be used anymore.

I have done quite a few re-installations including swapping drives over the years , never experienced so many problems with a Mac until now.

I have no video screen corruption and no spinning beachball.

The system appears to be running fine and if I am watching the Olympics (for example!), the video and audio continues. But I can't switch programs, Force Quit or do anything except power down.

I have just run Disk Utility and no problems were found.

Next time it happens, I will plug in a USB keyboard and see if that works - perhaps it's bluetooth which is crashing or stopping working, since both my keyboard and trackpad are wireless.
