Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

Hi,

Quick update for info. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and it found an error when doing the standard test and the extended test, although slightly different error codes each time. Here's what it found:

Extended test: error code 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD-1232

Non-extended test: error code 4MOT/4/40000003: HDD-1229

I've no idea if the "HDD" in the error codes should be taken literally - hope not! Anyway, I contacted Apple Support with the details and they talked me through clearing the RAM using a restart whilst holding Cmd-R and Alt-P. They also asked me to repair the disk permissions which did alter permissions on lots of files. I'm now going to monitor it for a few days to see if it continues to have kernel panics after being asleep.

They told me that the next step will be to re-install Mountain Lion if the problem persists. Apparently that can be done very easily whilst connected to the internet.

Regards,

Rob

Albert Cheeseman-

There is no current official list of those error codes available to consumers. But Topher Kessler wrote an article that cnet published detailing the ones he could get hold of. It says you have a troublesome Fan Motor. This could allow parts of your Mac to get too HOT and malfunction.

Grant,

Thanks for the link to that article, really useful. I'll keep an eye on temperatures just in case. I use a nice little app called iStats Menus (see http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/) which displays all the sensor temperatures from an icon in the main menu bar, so it's no trouble to do that.

There's never been a problem with temperatures or the fans that I've been aware of in the 18 months since the iMac was new. If there really is a hardware fault, I wonder if it's coincidental, or whether it could be a factor in the kernel panics. It's strange how the panics I'm getting only occur when the iMac is asleep - I assume they occur when something makes it wake from sleep. It's never happened while I've been using it, or when I manually wake it from sleep. I would have expected to see the panic occur more randomly than that if it was related to a fan motor fault.

I'll need a few days to monitor it now. Thanks again,

Rob

This is the report I received from the last kernal panic. If you can assist me I'd greatly appreciate it. I already reset PRAM and VRAM, but I haven't done a clean install. I did go back to OS 10.8.1 and made sure all available updates were installed. I keep having wake up and occassional freezing issues.

Having reached the depths of despair over frequent kernel panics and shutdowns and following 2 Genius Bar visits where they indicated no problems I had all but rebuilt the system countless times and in various configurations to no avail when I came across this;

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US

Took it to the Genius Bar and without question they replaced my logic board FOC and so far.............no crashes etc...

I was amazed over the response and it revived my flagging love of Apple products...not many companies would do that for a 2010 machine...actually most other laptops wouldn't last long enough to encounter a similar problem!

Not sure over the global coverage of the exchange but mine was UK.

Happy again!!! :-)

Just posting a progress update for anyone who's interested.

My problem is that I get a kernel panic on my 2011 iMac 27" every time I put it to sleep at night. In the morning when I expect to wake it up myself I find it's already running after having restarted by itself, and I get a warning about the kernel panic with the option of sending it to Apple. This only started happening after I upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion.

I've been talking to Apple Support and they've advised me to clear the RAM and reinstall Mountain Lion, neither of which made any difference. Then, when I sent them a copy of one of my panic reports they saw that it seemed to indicate that the graphics card was involved somewhere. I mentioned that I have two additional displays connected through the Thunderbolt ports (2x Samsung SyncMaster T240), so they suggested that I disconnect these before putting the iMac to sleep to see if that made any difference. Guess what? I've had no panics for a week now...

So it looks like the displays, or the Thunderbolt ports, are behind my problem. I don't think it's a hardware issue here because I never had a problem before Mountain Lion and it started immediately after I upgraded to it. I'm currently waiting for Apple Support to let me know what to do next but I thought this might be useful info for others who might be having similar problems.

Hi all,

it took quite a long time due to some organisational stuff but finally I brought my MBP to the genius bar. They knew this kind of error. I had to sign an assignment for a repair of about 400 EUR, but after they ran a test for this error, they cancelled it and created a new repair task for free. This seems to be the way apple handels this problem and now, after some days using discrete nvidia chip without any problem, I am very satisfied with that.

Thanks to apple and good luck to all of you!

9dan9-

Your problem is very unusual. It may be corruption in some synchronization data structures:

panic(cpu 3 caller 0xffffff80032a27aa): "pmap_pv_remove( ... ): pv not on hash, head:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Google Chrome He

You have some suspicious extensions installed, that may be the source of your problem:

com.rogueamoeba.InstantOnCore 6.0.1

com.rogueamoeba.InstantOn 6.0.1

Apple will not take you seriously unless/until you can replicate that panic without the kernel extensions.

Hi,

I've now had a reply from Apple Support saying that their engineers are aware of the problem affecting me and hope to have a resolution in a future update. They advise me to keep my system up to date.

So it would appear that the issue affecting me is a software issue after all, and that they expect it to be fixed. I just need to be patient I guess.

Regards,

Rob

Dec 18, 2012 5:04 AM in response to Albert Cheeseman

I have been convinced from day-ONE that this is a software issue... EVEN IF it's a hardware incompatability that surfaced only after Apple made changes to the OS... that's STILL a software problem for the multitude of users that experience these (and other) problems since upgrading to Mountain Lion.

There are forums all-over that I have been reading about KPs on all kinds of macs since the OS upgrade. My machine was rock-solid. Never a Kernel Panic, EVER...!!! It was bothering me to no-end; to see ppl on those forums professing "well, it's a bad video board, go have Apple replace it". No. No it's NOT. Well, in all fairness, there may be SOME cases where there coincidentally MIGHT have been hardware failure, but in almost every instance I read so far... after ppl had their macines worked-on to "fix" the hardware issue, the KPs continued after replacement. So, that tells me what I've known all along... something in the OS.

Glad to hear they are on it. I have been sending my daily crash logs to Apple in hopes that it will assist them. Right now, my Mac Pro is feeling pretty amateur. 🙂
