Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

You look to be having a continuing RAM problem.

If your Mac is broken, and you have nothing to lose, I suggest you slightly loosen the screws retaining the RAM slots to the motherboard (or loosen them until they are quite loose, then tighten them until they are just snug).

This has been reported to help some RAM problems, and is completely non-scientific.

Is anyone able to understand why this kernel panic on Maverick happened? The computer shut itself down and restarted while in the middle of copying files to an external drive.

Is that an external DRIVE or an external "smart" storage unit?

A list of your attached Hardware would be helpful. It is usually included at the end of the kernel panic report.

That is a problem detected in the File Locking software. It is a case of "the Readers and Writers problem" a Classic Computer Science problem.

In order to ensure File Integrity when allowing multiple Readers and Writers, complex File Interlocks are required to make certain there is never more than ONE Writer, and that Writer has exclusive access to the Files in question. Otherwise, out-of-date or mixed-up information may be provided to a Reader.

It may boil down to trying to run a Backup on a Volume with Open Files, where one device or the other has lost track of which files are actually in use, and having the interlock protocol violated.

To reduce the future risk of such problems, you should not attempt a Backup afer a long run of File usage, but instead Restart both your Mac and your Smart Drive enclosure to make certain both are assuming that files are not busy, and neither device has lost track of which files are in use.

If there is a software Update for your smart enclosure, be sure to install it. If not, try to report this problem to the manufacturer of the device.

I founds a solution for my kernel panic issue that was happening 5-7 times per day. With loads of research and almost getting ready to do a clean system install and sell my laptop here is what I learned, the basic version 😉 (If this solution works for you please spread the word as this is a horrible issue to live with).

There is an issue with the NVidia video card on mid-2010 Macbook Pro. Sometimes on Lion (10.8.x) and lots of times using Mavericks (10.9.x) the kernel panic is caused by the laptop switching between two different video cards on the same laptop 1. Intel video card 2. NVidia video card (defective on this mid-2000 model). The SOLUTION is to force your system to only use the Intel video card. To do this you can download the gfxcardstatus version 2.1 here (note you need this older version as it has the correct 'Integrated mode" mode you will need:https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=A9C9EF5F79924761%218546

Download, install and select "Integrated Mode". Note once installed and opened the controls with load into the top status bar only (not as a program in the dock). After I installed gfxcardstatus version 2.1 I have had ZERO KERNEL PANICS, Woo hoo!!! This save me from jumping out a window and I thank all those who's feedback allowed me to fix my laptop!

You also seem to be using El Capitan, and not Mountain Lion so you should be posting in the correct forum.

It also seems your panic involves the graphic subsystem. If you have more than one panic report and the kernel backtrace all looks the same, then chances are having problems with your graphics hardware.
