Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

I've been getting repeated kernel panics while trying to run the Avid Media Composer 6.5.2 installer. I've been on the phone with Avid Tech Support and they don't have an immediate explanation.

Here's my setup info and my latest 2 kernel panic logs. Can anyone lend any deciphering expertise as to the cause of the problem? It's a MacBook Pro 17-inch, Late 2011.

david friedman-

You have two panics due to page faults, with no non-Apple extensions present.

But the two panics are in completely different routines!

I think you should be suspicious of memory errors. If you have any other panics in your logs, look at them (or post them) to see if this is a trend (or non-trend). Non-trend add weight to the memory error possibility.

Apple Hardware Test is a good first check for gross errors, but false negatives are common. Overnight memory testing may be required.

Thanks for the response Grant - I was hoping to hear from you! I'm running the Apple Hardware Test now, and I selected the "extended testing" option - is that what you mean by overnight memory testing? Or is there some alternative method to do more extensive memory testing?

The other thing that makes me wonder a bit about bad RAM - sorry I didn't mention this earlier - is that I also saw a kernel panic 3 days ago on a different MacBook Pro (with nearly same specs) when running the same Avid Media Composer 6.5.2 installer.

If Apple Hardware test finds nothing, try :

http://osxdaily.com/2011/05/03/memtest-mac-ram-test/

The download link is there, scroll down. The actual download is done in the blink of an eye.

The Disk I/O is an Installer sessions write rapidly in bursts directly to sequential locations in memory, with no intervening instruction fetches. This produces a certain kind of stress that may make some problems show themselves.

I have a new mac mini 2.4ghz i7 with upgraded 16gb of ram and have experienced occasional kernel panics where the computer auto restarts, but also issues with fullscreen hulu and netflix where the screen image freezes, but can still hear audio. I do a hard reboot for this latter case but it doesn't prompt me for a "send issue to apple" as in the case with the kernel panic.

I have a bluetooth apple mouse, generic wired keyboard, power come via UPS that typically shows the voltage output at 118v, but falls to at most 113V if my space heater is on.

The log below is for the latest kernel panic where I was watching fullscreen video (ABC.com) and the computer rebooted itself.

Is it possible that if the UPS's output voltage drops to a low level that is enough to power the mini, but freeze up the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement process?

Also, I ran the extended hardware test with the 2x8gb ram, but the computer always froze up part way through the memory test.

I ran the same test with just 1 chip in each slot, and the tests passed.

I also ran the 2 original chips (2x2gb), both installed, and it passed the memory test.

I suspect the hardware test can't handle 16gb load?

I've been having the same problems with kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro 6,2 and tried every solution I could find to fix it: reinstall ML, disabled bluetooth, turned off my wireless keyboard before sleep mode, etc.. I took my machine into the Apple store and they ran a hardware test (which it passed) and suggested it might be a ram issue (third party ram).

When the panics continued (and got worse) I brought my machine in again, this time with a print out of this discussion thread mentioning the possible video card issue (I was seeing the same Nvidia error in my reports). The genius at the bar disregarded that possibility, saying the video card error was an issue only with older machines, but took my machine in to run a hardware test plus a software test.

Turns out that it WAS an issue with the video card and that this is a known issue with Apple. They didn't even bother running the software test and just replaced the logic board. My suggestion would be to get in touch with Apple and reference this discussion regarding the video card issue.

It's been three weeks now and not one kernel panic.

austunner-

You had a page fault in Mac OS X power management. There are no non-Apple kernel extensions present.

This routine is used for many things, including power failure and certain memory errors. A failure here could indicate you have a fault while handling a fault.

If you have other kernel panics in your logs, take a look at them or post them for analysis. A trend will help to pinpoint the problem. A Non-Trend points to random memory failures.

I know this has probably been documented thoroughly in this thread, but keeping the signal-to-noise-ratio high seems to be important for this issue(s). I don’t think it can get bumped enough. ;-P

I’ll share our recent experience with this, since it has a happy ending, in the hope that it may also help others:

  • My partner’s late 2010 MBP was throwing kernel panics when running Chrome and iPhoto. Which brought me to threads such as this one, and this support base article from Apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
  • Took it into a service shop, referenced support base article TS4088, and happily awaited new logic board, confident her troubles were solved.
  • However, the MBP passed all the diagnostic tests in the shop with flying colours.
  • I called Apple Supoprt, explained the situation, and got a ticket # from them that documented Apple’s authorization to the service depot to proceed with further diagnostics under Apple Care. Although I was asked the usual disclaimers (have your reset the PRAM, the SMC, etc.), once the service representative had looked up TS4088 there was no more procedural skepticism — they immediately requested that I take the machine back for further diagnostics to be underwritten by Apple Care, and seemed surprisingly keen to assure me of the outcome (surprising since they didn’t exactly have the machine in front of them).
  • Went back to the service depot with the aforementioned ticket #, and also specifically requested that they try to invoke the KP in iPhoto (which luckily in our case was a pretty foolproof way to reproduce it).
  • I guess they either ran some additional hardware diagnostic (authorized via the call to Apple Support) or finally caught it via iPhoto, because we were shortly informed that the logic board was being replaced under Apple Care.

And just for the record, not at all happy with the way Apple has handled this (excepting the Apple Support representative I spoke with, who was super efficient and helpful). Computers will be computers, but one trade off for being all vertically-integrated-and-walled-garden-y ought to be resolving debacles like with far more speed and grace, IMHO.

tl;dr — If a service centre can‘t reproduce your kernel panics with the tests they’re willing to run, call Apple Support and reference TS4088. Get their blessing for the service centre to keep at it until they confirm it and fix it.

Jan 10, 2013 12:23 PM in response to Michael-Owen

Michael-Owen,

TS4088 refers to a specific MBP model under 10.8.x, and the KP it produces is a specific one, of course. E.g. on this page of this thread only the one of MarkRiddoch is a TS4088, the others are not. So, careful with suggesting people here that all they need to do in case of a KP is to go to Apple, call up "TS4088" and walk home with a FOC new logic board - which is what I read from your post...

This could cost those poor people a lot of time, money, and Apple and AASP personnel a lot of hair and nerves.
