Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

Those are some pretty wild reports.

You have a couple that show that the Virtual memory tables may have been clobbered. A lot of Page faults, but they are all over the place.

If your Mac OS X is not corrupted, this lack-of-trend may indicate a memory problem. (Only the Mac Pro is exempt -- it has error-correcting memory).

page back a few and see the suggestions I left fot laufgestalt, such as running Apple Hardware test, downloading and running Memtest under Mac OS X, and also consider running memtest straight from the command-line to test more memory.

Thanks Grant.

So, All, I took my machine to the Apple Store and they put in an immediate work order in for a new logic board free of charge. They didn't even bother to run the hardware tests, as yesterday I had given phone support all coroberating information regarding a TS4088 case.

Important to note is that NONE of my panic reports showed the

NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

code.

After speaking to the Genius, it seems that Apple is widening the scope of this extended warranty for mid-2010 15" macbook pros (unofficially, of course). In November when I brought it in and gave all the same information the manager was nothing but skeptical, and refused to repair for free when it "passed" the hardware tests. Today, the Genius indaicated that Apple has been updating their hardware tests to better expose this issue, so if you have not scheduled an appointment specifically referencing the TS4088 calim lately, I'd say try again.

Good luck out there.

Mar 4, 2013 8:21 AM in response to artfulalibi

I was getting this

NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I suppose I still am subject to it, but I am able to work around it.

In Lion I was able to use the gfxcardstatus to force "i" mode (integrated), but since upgrading to Mountain Lion using that utility to switch would cause a kernel panic as well. There are a few other new scenarios that caused the KP in Mountain Lion

in ML, I went to /System/Library/Extensions and renamed all the NVIDIA driver extensions i.e. NVD*.kext directories to NVD*.kext_rename now all is fine for what I want to do. I guess I'll have to do it again whenever i do a system update.

This should have been easier. Sure, i have bad hardware (so i'm reading), but i don't care enough to shell out the $ when the hardware that is working is sufficient for me. You could argue this as an enhancement but as a developer I define bug as "anything not meeting defined spec / or reasonable expectations". The bug is that when there is a hardware failure, in the, arguably optional, graphics card you are unnecessarily forced into many scenarios that cause a kernel panic.

That doesn't make them liable for my past pain as all systems have bugs, but they should attempt to fix this.

P.S. Apple Store found nothing wrong with my hardware when they took it for 3 days of tests. But I was on Lion at the time and found gfxcardstatus to ease my pain. Now i have the new analgesic above

When you rename those .kexts, you effectively un-install them on next re-boot. They are used for graphics acceleration, so now when you use discrete graphics, it is running un-accelerated.

When you wish to use an external disply, that is only supported on the discrete graphics.

Readers are having much better success getting repairs when they print out bulletin TS4088 and take it with them.

I was having kernel panics on Mountain Lion as well. I got fed up and went back to Snow Leopard. Unforuntetly, iPhoto requires at least Lion to sync photo stream, so I am running Lion. After disabling auto graphics switching on my MacBookPro6,2, the problem seems to have stopped. I am still leary of Mountain Lion though.

For those with a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro, you might be able to get it fixed until April 2013.

That is an ordinary protection fault, that happened here:

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: backupd

the backup process.

you have two non-Apple kernel extensions loaded:

com.Logitech.Unifying.HID Driver 1.2.0

com.Logitech.Control Center.HID Driver 3.6.0

You look to have some Logitech USB devices installed. Could they be the source of the problem?

are the drivers up-to-date? why do you even need drivers?
