changing user icon in OS X 10.8; "edit picture" button missing!?

Trying to change my user "avatar/icon/picture" displayed at the login screen. Usually this is a straight forward process from SysPref --> Users & Groups --> click on the picture -> edit picture -> choose.

However I've either gone blind or the "edit picture" option is just missing from OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion which seems odd. Anyone else have this issue or am I just crazy?

I have lots of photos in iPhoto... don't know what Aperture is. (Is it okay to continue asking questions here, since I am asking about a different topic, I don't want to hijack a post or break any rules... but it appeared the original post is answered??) Right now I am trying to attach a photo to an email, I understand I cannot do that from pictures/iPhoto (don't understand the WHY of this yet) but that I have to go to Media. Fine, I am in media - is there a way to force an 'update'? The photo I want is in PhotoStream... (first it seems to take longer to get to photo stream on the MBP from my iPad than it does between iPad and iPhone, but it got there), BUT, it is not showing up in Media yet, (I would think that would happen simultaneously to showing up in photostream up on iPhoto Library??) I tried quitting iPhoto and Email and coming back in to Media (is Media ONLY accessible from an 'attach' situation??, It isn't listed in Finder if I just open that). Thanks!

Anyone know what might cause this to be completely disabled in Lion?

I've unlocked the Users & Groups window, but I drag/drop a picture on top of the default image doesn't work. What's weird is if I go to my entry in Address Book (either local or iCloud), the image is shown when I click on edit, but it not displayed when I save. I also don't seem to be able to create a Full Name.

While my machine is work-issued, I've confirmed this isn't something that's been disabled.

Any thoughts?

I agree that this way to use a custom picture is not a good method. When apps have options to choose from, the normal way one would select a file from the hard drive is to use a "browse button". Having to open a new Finder window, then browse to your image, then drag in drop, is much less intuative than using a single "browse" button that opens a Finder window for you.

Well I've been a Mac user since 1991 and this really wasn't easy.

I eventually figured out after trying to drag my custom picture onto the Users & Groups dialogue box, trying to drag it into the picture's well. The trick is to is click on the picture, then further click onto any of the pictures offered, click the little almost invisible edit icon on the bottom, leave the picture open, then go back to your Finder and drag your desired picture on top of the open library picture.

What a palavar.

What was wrong with the old "chose image" button?

I started this thread two years ago when Mountain Lion was released. Apple is clearly not going to address this. This also isn't the only thread documenting this change, nor is it the first with people complaining about it. So far, I've heard two arguments while rummaging through posts:

"It's intuitive; if you can't get it, you're not smart enough" (paraphrasing, of course)

And

"Generic Apple eliteism jargon" (If this is the way Apple is doing it, it must be the best way for usability, 'cause Apple).

I wouldn't expect anything from them at this point.
