No Wake-on-LAN possible since updating to ML

Hi everybody,

since updating from OS X 10.7 to 10.8 (clean install), Wake-on-LAN does not work anymore. Setup: Mac mini (Early 2011) connected to Time Capsule (2nd gen) via devolo dLAN. Mac mini goes to sleep after 30 minutes and eventually disappears from the network. Sending Wake-On-LAN packets or using Back To My Mac fail, it simply won't wake up.

Wake-on-LAN worked smoothly under 10.7 after some problems. Any ideas?

Thanks and regards

Steffen

I did some testing this weekend also. I have an actiontec router from Verizon Fios also, and my Time Capsule setup in Bridge Mode behind it. Apple has been claiming that all the wake on Lan issues had to do with the bridge mode, it actually does not, there are plenty reports replicating this issue without the bridge mode. My iMac (latest generation) was hard wired to the time capsule and I also had the wifi setting on. After the computer would go into deep sleep no file sharing, screen sharing, ios wifi syncing or accessing iMac from Apple TV could be done. I turned off the wifi setting on the iMac and I am now able to screen share, and file share; iOS wifi sync and accessing the iMac library from Apple TV still does not work.

The next thing that I did was I disconnected the timecapsule from the Actiontec router and set the TIme Capsule in DHCP/NAT mode. I ignored no wan connection errors. In other words I created a local network. Once the computer went into deep sleep the ios wifi sync and accessing iMac library from Apple TV was a no go.

I spoke to Apple tech support for empteen's time and the lady that I spoke to told me that it is a known issue where the comuter disconnects from the network whether wired or wireless once it goes into deep sleep.

MacUserAE, I'd really like you to test out the Wake on Lan app I posted earlier.

If that works, then we know it isn't a network issue, but a computer A software issue.

In other words, if that app sends out the correct packet and it wakes your computer, that tells us the Apple software isn't sending out the correct packet, and the tech you spoke with was incorrect in her synopsis of the computer completely disconnecting from the network. Putting my Mac Pro to sleep, I can not wake it with SSH, Telnet, Apple Remote Desktop, filesharing or screen sharing. Using the app I posted a few posts ago, I can wake my Mac Pro. Give it a shot and let us know what you find.

Cody

I can certainly test it but I am not sure whether that will be informative. I have all wake on lan working except for one feature, wifi sync with ios devices. As I stated in an earlier post I use the actiontec and have the wireless there turned off. I then connect my dual band time capsule in bridge mode and all the wifi is done thru the time capsule. I originally had the iMac wired with ethernet to time capsule and had wifi turned in also. I turned off the wifi on the imac and only have it connected via rthernet. This allowed for file sharing, screen sharing and back to my mac ti wirk. iOS wifi syn and apple tv accessing the imac rained a problem. I powered down the apple tv and turned hime sharing off and in in apple tv and now apple tv wakes imac from sleep. The inly thing that dies not wake up the imac from sleep is wifi sync from ios device. There is either a differnt magic packet that is being sent from ios device or i just cant figure out what to refresh ot what feature to toggle. I eas hiping that somine that can in fact wake their mac from sleep bia wifi sync would shed some light on this.

I hope this helps someone. Cody if you still think that I should test the app and would be helpful let me know.

I would not mind testing it for you at all. Ill probably do it tomorrow night and post results. An interesting thing that I neglected to mention in my previous post is that I have a lacie thunderbolt drive with big blue eye connected to my iMac. When I hit wifi sync in my iPhone and the iMac is asleep the blue eye lights up indicating that the harddrive a are waking up but the wifi sync does not initiate. I think it just times out. Was hoping someone can help/comment in this issue.

I was hoping that someone smarter than me could help me out with my iOS wifi sync issue. What I realized today is that when I have been away from the house for a period of time (ie not connected to wifi) when I return and try to wifi sync within a short period of time it wakes the iMac no problems. After about 15 min if I try to wifi sync and the iMac is sleeping it will wake the hard disk but the sync will not go thru. If at this point I power cycle the iPhone I can all of a sudden sync again and then waiting 15 min it will wake the hard disk but the sync will not happen. Would appreciate all the input.

Working, for now:

I've posted on this thread a few times. I was having the problem for a while. At one point, two or three months ago, I did a clean install of my iMac with Mountain Lion, can't remember what version. It worked for a while. And then stopped. Then it wasn't going to sleep on schedule either.

I applied the Combo update for 10.8.3 and my Mac now goes to sleep as configured and wakes up when I use an ssh app called ServerAuditor (free). Kind of a weird name but a pretty nice SSH app. I just looked in my Console and it shows a magic packet was received when I connected with the app. If you're willing to enable Remote Login in Sharing you could try it as a wakeup method.

3/20/13 8:46:48.000 AM kernel[0]: Ethernet [AppleBCM5701Ethernet]: Wake reason GIGE - magic packet received

I have to admit, I tried just about everything that's been posted on this thread. So your results will no doubt vary. But the combo updater might be worth a try if you haven't gone that route yet.

I have a 27" i7 iMac that's plugged into my network via ethernet cable.

FOUND TEMPORARY FIX

this has been working for me, for now:

Installed Mobile Mouse Server on my Mac. Installed the app on my phone and iPad.

When 'shared library' doesn't show on my media apps from iTunes, I open mobile mouse, it connects even though Mac is sleeping. I left click the mouse app.

Go back and check the media apps and the 'shared libraries' appears!

Good luck.

This has been working EVERY TIME:

Connect your iPad/iPhone to your iMac via Bluetooth when iMac is awake.

Now when iMac is sleeping and

When iTunes shared library doesn't show up, turn on Bluetooth on your iPad/iPhone and click on your iMac connection.

Now I have found whether or not the device connects to the Mac, the connection to the shared library can now be made through the other apps.

Try it, it has worked EVEY TIME.
