Calendar not importing .ics

Calendar is not accepting .ics invites. Here's the scenario:

I receive an email invite to a meeting (they use outlook exchange). I quicklook the .ics file to check the date/time/etc... It's all correct. I then double-click the .ics file and iCal (now Calendar) opens. Nothing happens: it doesn't add the file, move to the day of the event, etc...

This only happens occasionally and it's driving me nuts. Most of the time meeting invites work, but every so often they won't. Or they will but then any updates won't be accepted.

Any thoughts?

(I'm on a MacBook Pro 15'' that's a few years old, running 10.8)

This is exactly my experience. Using El Capitan, clicking on .ics invites in Mail, Calendar opens but nothing else happens. When I tap on the same invite in my iPhone, it populates the event. Then I have to sync with my laptop. But it can't be with EVERYONE, can it, because if so surely Apple would have fixed this. It's only with some .ics files or only with some configurations of OSX. Still, it shouldn't be happening at all, should it?

OK. I don't know if what worked for me will work for everybody's problems. But after some time with second-level Apple Support, here is what resolved my issue above, as provided by the Apple Tech person (Marlena: thank you):

-Steps to resolve your Mac and .ICS file attachment issue

-Ensure you are signed into iCloud on your Mac and that Calendars are check marked

-If you are signed in, sign out and delete everything from the Mac, It won’t delete anything it will just remove your account from the computer

-Once signed out, sign back in merging all iCloud information back onto the computer

-Force Quit Calendar app

-Safe Launch app (Holding down shift key, while opening the app)

-Once the app opens release the shift key

-Try downloading your .ICS file, Mail attachment again

-Issue should be resolved at this point as long as the mail attachment is being send to your iCloud calendar.
