Calendar slow/unresponsive after Mountain Lion update

I downloaded and installed OS X Mountain Lion when it came out but ever since the update the now called Calendar is so and unresponsive. For example, when I swipe or click to go to another week I get the "beach ball" and then it moves a couple of seconds later. Same with scrolling up and down. The problem goes away when turning off my iCloud calendars but then Calendar is useless to me without it.

Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem on Mavericks. I tried:

  1. File > Export > Calendar Archive. (My archive was 4.67 GB!)
  2. Restart.
  3. Calendar > Accounts. Takes you to Sys Prefs.
  4. Choose iCloud account (two, in my case), click -.
  5. Restart.
  6. Choose Calendar > Preferences. (Going directly to Sys Prefs didn't work.)
  7. Enable the iCloud account, if it's already listed. Otherwise, click +.

Calendar seems to work properly now. Not perpetually updating.

Thanks, Ferd II!
