Apple says I can open any Appleworks v6 word doc in Pages, but I can't!

From what I find in searches, many folks have Appleworks documents that they want to keep and use with the new software but can't.

I read in Mac World (Oct 2011) that if I went to the "get info" window and changed the appleworks word doc to "open with Pages" that the pages app would then open the document with no problem. I did that - but it will not. I am using Appleworks 6.2.9 and IWorks '06.

So I am seeking any ideas of ways to actually open the document without manually opening each and every doc in Appleworks to save in a changed file format to something another app (Word, Pages, etc.) will open.

Any ideas will be welcome!

Thanks for responding fruhulda.

At first, I realized some documents were spreadsheets since they all ended with ".cwk". But I refined the search and made sure they were word docs. Then when the first one didn't open, I tried with several others but still the same "Pages can't open this document" message appeared. So I tried "open with" Pages - same result. I went to the individual file "get info" window and changed the "open with" to "Pages", closed the window and then double clicked on the file. Pages opened and the same error message appeared. So I think I'm doing everything right - do you have files and do they open correctly?

The Pages version is 2.02 from IWorks '06.

Thanks Peggy. That is what Apple says too. So I am confused. I think I am using Appleworks v6 ("About Appleworks" says v 6.2.9) and the Pages won't open. Yet, you and Apple say it should. Is there some way to ascertain if I have the wrong version of Appleworks? I appreciate your clarifying if you can. Thanks!

Your version of AppleWorks is the latest, but you cannot open all AppleWorks files in Pages. Pages can only open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents. Numbers can open AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets & Keynote can open AppleWorks 6 presentations. I think the files you are trying to open are not one of these. Why don't you e-mail one or two of these files to me & I will let you know exactly what they are & what you can use to open them. You will find my e-mail address in the bio\graphy section of my profile.

Thanks Peggy, Yes, I knew you needed numbers for spreedsheets and keynotes for presentations as well as word processing for pages. I have checked on both the spreadsheets and word documents. The files I am trying to open are previous letters, not spreadsheets. I am sure of this. So I appreciate your offer, but I don't think sending a document to you would necessarily prove anything. I even tried making a brand-new test document to open with the two programs and it didn't seem to work. I will try to reinstall snow leopard and see if something was corrupted somehow.

Peggy,

You have said seveal times that Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will open only Appleworks - word, spreadsheet, and presentation documents. I am fully aware of this, nothing needs to said about that fact again. I do have the same situation that "Flyboy74" is talking about. I can open AW 6.2.9 documents using the iWorks applications on my iMac that is running on Mountain Lion, no problem, HOWEVER, just as "Flyboy" has stated, I am not able to get the iWork applications to open the exact AW 6 documents on my Macbook running with Snow Leopard. Nor can I get the iWorks application to open newly created AW 6 work processing and spreadsheet documents.

The Snow Leopard on the Macbook has been reinstalled, also has the AW 6, and the iWorks 9, and all updates have been done. Disc utilities has examined and repaired all permissions.

To clarify again: all AW documents are version 6, iWorks apps are version '09, all software is up to date.

Also Peggy, you have hepled me before with advice on openeing and saving older ClarisWorks and earlier versions of Appleworks documents. Thank you very much for that advice.

Are you able to shed any lighton the iWorks situation.

Thank you in advance.

My last reply in this thread was more than four months ago & I have a hard time remembering what I did four hours or four days ago. But I don't see that you have done what I said in that last post. Just today I was converting a file for someone & the file did not have the .cwk extension. Even AppleWorks 6 in Snow Leopard wouldn't recognize it until I added the extension.

And I have received files many times that the sender insists are AppleWorks 6 files & they are not.

Thank you Peggy, but my posting earlier today was my first for this subject.

You asked some else to send you a document.

And to clarify, all of my documenrs do have the .cwk suffix.

I do believe that I have a software issue with the MacBook, since everything works fine on the iMac.

I also have another avenue for this problem and if it solves the problem, I will post about right here.

By the way, I still have emails from you from 3 or 4 years ago when you helped me with ClarisWorks conversions.

You may still have my email, and if so, I do not mind being contacted about this matter.

Odd, I've been able to open AppleWorks 6 word processing documents in Pages since I first started using Pages in iWork '05. It might have more to do with the Mac & the OS than Pages. I just tried opening an AppleWorks 6 word processing file in Pages 2/iWork '06 on my Mac mini running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 & it would not open. I just got a generic "couldn't open' error. I then tried this same file in Pages 1.0.2/iWork '05 & Pages 2 on my G5 iMac running Tiger 10.4.11 & it opened without problems in both.

Peggy,

You got the same generic message that I was receiving.

After I searched and found the iWork 9.1 update for Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and 10.6.8, my iWork apps are working.

The new versions are now Keynote version 5.1, Numbers 2.1, and Pages 4.1

The web site for the iWord 9.1 update is:

Hope this helps. Let me know.
