salvage components from dead imac

Hi,
we have an imac dv se 400 at work that has the firmware osx problem now as S4, as in dead without going to the jumper-hardware trick and no one is willing to risk electrocution for this old machine! my question is whether the dvd/cd drive can be recycled in another machine like a beige G3 or even an external case; and same question for the hard drive, though I think that would be easier. I'm guessing the firewire and usb ports on the side must be soldered to the board, though. thanks for any input (or another solution for S4 than the old floppy cable trick)

The Hard Disk is a 3.5" standard desktop drive so will fit in just about any Firewire/USB Enclosure if you can think of a purpose for a 13Gb drive!

The slot-loading DVD-ROM drive is of laptop size and so won't easily fit an enclosure or in any desktop so is probably of most worth on ebay - sold as a replacement for another iMac G3 with a defective drive.

The only other parts of any real use will be the RAM sticks.

Can I have more info on this trick?
Working inside an iMac is surprisingly easy. I thought I would risk electrocution too until I opened it up. It is well designed and the CRT circuits are well protected from people working in the logic-board/drives area.

info on the "trick" is here:

the 1st link is the actual hardware solution; it is the mirror site, mentioned in the second link below; I've never been able to open the original site. the third link below is the whole series of what to do if you have the firmware issue. like I said the imac I'm dealing with is at S4 (in the third link scheme)
