Numbers eats 70% CPU when mouse hovers over document

This happens only on my new MacBook Air 11" and only since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Whenever my mouse pointer is over a Numbers document (not the window title, but the actual document), CPU usage by Numbers.app goes to 70% and stays there until I move my mouse somewhere else.

Did anyone else experience this?

Not for me unfortunately. Did you have Numbers already installed before you updated to 10.8.1?

Yes. I started this thread and had 10.8.0 with Numbers installed all the time, and did nothing but update to 10.8.1 now.

How is it for you now - when you hover the mouse over Numbers, if you're looking at Activity Monitor, does climb to 80+%? I see that when I hover the mouse out of Numbers, Numbers CPU activity goes down to normal.

It used to climb to 70%, but now it doesn't. It spends a few cpu cycles tracking my mouse movements, but once I stop moving, cpu activity stops also. What you are describing is what I had before the OS update.

Unfortunately, the problem remains after the update.

The only thing that has changed is that, before the update, the CPU increased its activity up to 80% if you hovered the mouse over a table, despite if you have clicked on a cell or not. Now the CPU increases its activity up to 80% when you hover the mouse over a table, AFTER a certain cell is clicked.

So,

I have upgradet to 10.8.1

1. After the upgrade I have wait 30 mins with soinning wheel after the restart

2. And nothing happened

3. I have shut down my Macbook Pro from the Power button and restrted

4. It had sshowed 10.8.1, but I have downloaded the 10.8.1 update and did it again

5. Finally, I havenow Numbers with about 60% eating. The temparature curve is not so extreme, but the CPU diode is showing 71 - 91ºC!

I mean that Apple has not solved their own problem with Mountain Lion and Numbers!

But it our problem, because we have paid to have a problem.

Mike,

This issues seems to be confined to the pointer and its position relative to a table. Hovering over any other object in a sheet is OK. Hovering over an Inspector pane is OK. You will reduce the impact of this situation if you can get by with minimal use of the pointing device over tables. Navigate with the arrow keys when possible. Be conscious of where the pointer is as you work.

A large Text Box filled with text of zero opacity, so as to not be too obtrusive or a Shape with the Background Fill set to zero Opacity, can be used to make a safe place to "park" your pointer when you aren't using it. Just a clumsy work-around, I know.

Please take a few minutes to Submit Feedback to the Numbers team from the Numbers menu.

Regards,

Jerry
