Numbers eats 70% CPU when mouse hovers over document

This happens only on my new MacBook Air 11" and only since I upgraded to Mountain Lion.

Whenever my mouse pointer is over a Numbers document (not the window title, but the actual document), CPU usage by Numbers.app goes to 70% and stays there until I move my mouse somewhere else.

Did anyone else experience this?

mttl,

If I'm bored someday, I may spend the couple of hours that would take and see what happens. My sense is that the first level phone guys are pretty far down on the food chain and you have to get lucky to speak with the more influential staff.

I do plan to drop by the Apple store the next time I'm at the mall and see if I can get a Genius to comment on the situation, hoping that they can file a report.

Still not working for me either. Does the same thing both on my iMac and my Macbook Air. The fan on my macbook air probably turns on once every two months. Hardly ever. I fire up numbers...it starts blowing full speed. Same as everyone else. Hovering the mouse, moving a page up and down...

I'm gonna submit feedback from the numbers menu. Also gonna call Applecare and see what they say.

I found a way to at least stop the symptoms of the problem. It alleviates the heat issue and high CPU usage.

There's a command line utility called cputhrottle that allows you to set a specific percentage of CPU usage alloted to a PID. I installed and ran the utility, set CPU usage for Numbers to 20% (10% made performace really choppy), and now I can at least use Numbers normally without constantly thinking about cursor placement.

Give it a shot, but I believe the PID's are a moving target, so you have to reset cputhrottle when that happens.

I have same problem, went into apple store couldn't figure out why my MB AIR 2012 kept heating up and chewing up battery. I said can't be any apps cause all I had was iWork. They said was becuase I upgraded to ML and needed to do a clean install. Did that with them @ apple store fresh install of 10.8.1 exact same problem. I would expect this from Mac Office.........but seriously iwork???? come on apple this is ridiculous. I now have activity monitor open all the time to keep an eye on this thing. I had itunes do it today, just playing a song CPU 94% and HOT!!!!! wasn't able to repeat that again, but numbers continues to do it on even a blank page.

Hi Jerry,

Unfortunately, I have no idea. It just heats up just like it heats up when flash is running in the background. Only this time, flash has been killed (ie not running). I have about 25 tabs opened, which may seem a lot but MacOS is able to handle this - I know this because before upgrading to ML, I frequently have about 40 - 50 tabs open everyday. It's only after the upgrade that this happens. And I have to kill Safari, restart and reload all over again which is quite interuptive to my work everyday, and embarassing when my clients ask what's that noise, the fan in the background?!
