When I try to open pdfs downloaded from the internet via Safari to the Mountain Lion desktop I get this message:
"There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
I have encountered this problem with pdfs downloaded from several sources.
When I open pdfs received in email messages there is no probem.
Can anyone advise please?

I am having the same problems opening pdfs. It happens everytime I either upgrade adobe or mac os. Usually it works to dump the adobe plug-in. This time the only thing that worked was to switch to chrome and not use safari.
The problem seems to come from saving the file after displaying in my Safari (6.0.2 (8536.26.17)) with OS 10.8.2 on my MBP 2012. If I where to control click or right click and download the link, the PDFs are not corrupted.
I have not experienced the problem with other browsers and OS including Win7 IE. I have not tested it Safari for Windows using Win7. And is not site/server issue.
I wanted to edit my post but couldn't do it so here is an addendum.
I have Acrobat Pro 11.0 on my system. When viewing the PDF file, I sometimes get a menu over the PDF where I can save the file or open with a PDF menu bar in the Safari window. When I save it this way, the PDFs are not corrupt.
I was finally able to save pdfs while accessing through safari by following the instructions in this post:

But this has happened everytime we upgrade adobe reader or upgrade apple os. The rule in my house is do not upgrade abobe
I can't see why you'd even _install_ Adobe Reader? It's totally unnecessary on OS X. Preview works fine.
Unfortunately removing Adobe Reader doesn´t help for those PDFs that have already be downloaded and saved. Interestingly some PDFs can be saved and opened using Adobe Reader but not others.
Lanny is right. Delete those two files from the Internet Plug-ins folder, and the problem will go away. Keep in mind that you have to drag them into the trash and enter your password to get rid of them. You also have to quit and then restart Safari for the changes to take effect.
I had the same problems as described but using Firefox.
