Anyone experiencing problems with pdfs with Mountain Lion?

When I try to open pdfs downloaded from the internet via Safari to the Mountain Lion desktop I get this message:

"There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."

I have encountered this problem with pdfs downloaded from several sources.

When I open pdfs received in email messages there is no probem.

Can anyone advise please?

Hi

Usually when I get these errors I might be trying to unzip a zipped file that was "let's say from a questionable source". It's like trying to play an illegal DVD movie. Some players look for copyright issues. In your case I have had difficulty opening PDFs with Safari/Mountain Lion. I get a black screen. As I have identified earlier, I have updated the Adobe Acrobat Pro software and still have the issue. I concur with Timothy47 above that Safari is part of the problem. Good luck everyone and hopefully some wise apple (ha ha) will come up with a solution to an annoying problem.

PS Don't you just love the Apple gray they use above to help create that needed contrast for viewing?

I have found no problem with downloading a PDF using Chrome browser. Specifically are you trying to open a PDF file or just downloading. Some internet sites will allow you to download to your computer while others will open a PDF file at their site. I am having difficulty using Safari to open a file at an internet site. I have never had a problem opening a PDF file once I have downloaded in to my computer.

I have similar results trying to open "saved pdf's". When they are opened in the brower (Safari) they are readable, but after being saved they cannot be opened with Adobe or Preview. I get the message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5.2.

This has been a recent problem for me for approximately 2 weeks. I have many pdf's saved previously that open without a problem.

What exactly is involved in "saving" the files? I would assume that it has to do with Adobe due to being saved as a pdf. Is there a component from OS X (my current 10.8.2) which could cause or contribute to the error?

All help is appreciated. I've spent many hours on various forums trying to get this resolved.

I am having the same issues with not being able to open downloaded PDF files. This started after the system upgrade to 10.8.2. After reading related comments, I removed the Adobe internet plug-ins from Safari, com.adobe.acrobat.pdfviewer.plist and com.adobe.acrobat.pdfviewer.plist.lockfile. I was then able to open any downloaded PDF file. However, when these are absent from their intended file, you lose the formatting/page size, etc. in Safari. As a workaround, you can download the same file without losing the display characterisitics by right-clicking on the file and choosing the option to "Download the linked file". In summary, this appears to be a bug in the Adobe plug-in (s).

I had been having a similar problem on Lion with Safari pdf files despite downloading the latest Adobe Reader XI.

I would constantly get the same messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. And I would get a blank page when I tried to print the pdf if I tried printing from the Safari web page using File - Print from the top toolbar on my laptop.

Then I came across the grey Safari lozenge with action icons.

This allowed me, without downloading the pdf, to print the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.

Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.

I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar.
