Microsoft has not created a version of Word for the iPad, however, there are numerous word processing Apps available in the App store.
You need some 3rd party apps to open/edit/save MS Office files
Have a look at the following:

You can use the free CloudOn App for use with Word and Office documents; http://itunes.apple.com/app/cloudon/id474025452?alreadyRedirected=1&mt=8
CloudOn is a joke, so are the other on-line apps that make you pay.. i'd rather use a app that just lets me edit the files on the fly with out the hassle hair pulling screaming at the device because the 4G data restriction just clamped down reducing speed to a screaching halt. any editor that does not need a internet connection is better than one that does. if ye are looking for one that mirrors Word, DocsUnlimited is a online one i tested. its 3.99 (Correction 4.99) in the apps store and is a close mimic to Word 2000. and is crisp and clear wear as CloudOn Nivio and OnLive both have clarity problems. and heres that link https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/documents-2-unlimited-office/id504968354?mt=8
Not as cheap as docs unlimited but I use Documents to Go. It interfaces quite well with my computer and the part that I like the best is that the app comes with a separate program for your computer that allows for the syncing of documents without having to go through iTunes.
and you can install that same program on multiple computers....say if you want to sync documents between work and home computers, all you need is to have the ipad and computer on the same wifi network to sync.
It is good to remember that all word processing apps are skinned down versions of real programs...so they work, but wont' have all the formatting bells and whistles and such of the full fledged programs.
