iMac Automatically Booting in Single-user mode since upgrading to ML

Hi All...

Since up grading my mid 08 iMac to mountain lion whenever I cold boot my mac it boots automatically into single user mode, entering exit at the command prompt continues the boot process.

so far I've

1. reset the PRAM

2. reset the SMC

3. reinstalled mountain lion

4. removed all 3rd part apps

5. checked the right boot drive is selected

6. repaired disk permissions

7. repaired the disk.

8. Spent two days on the telephone to a rather bamboozled Apple technician.

Any input would really be appreciated!

I have the same problem here. I'm running 10.8.1, but my iMac is still starting up in Single User Mode. Tried starting up with keyboard and mouse on AND off, but it doesn't make a difference. Reset PRAM, didn't do anything either.

The strange thing is: my iMac only starts up in SUM the first time I switch it on after not having used it for a while. When I turn it off and start it up again, it seems to work normally.
