Can someone explain how to find and open/edit the this smb.conf file I keep reading about. I can't even find it. I am can connect to Windows 2008 servers, but its very slow browsing, transerring, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I just updated to the new Mountain Lion when it came out so I am not sure if this file exists in here.

Did you mean sysctl.conf?
You will have to create it.
First open terminal and type
sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
This should help, but the setting will be reset on reboot.
To make it permanent you must create a file /etc/sysctl.conf that contains the single line
net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0

Thank you, so far i just did the terminal command and the difference was dramatic. I created the file, but did not reboot, but I am sure it will work well too.
Good Morning. I'm having the same issue. A couple of questions, please. If you have the Mac set up with an admin account and a separate user account will running this script work for the user? Also, if this fix does work, where do you place the permanent file? Thank you.
So I'm new to the mac, and having this same exact issue. My move from PC to mac is not complete, so im not sure how to create the file in question to make the fix permanent
