Calendar - Exchange sync issue

I'm having a problem with Calendar and Exchange syncing (my company uses Exchange 2010), with the following error:


"Calendar can’t save the event “Item title” to the Exchange server.


The account "Exchange" currently can’t be modified. To discard your changes and continue using the version of your calendars that’s on the server, click Revert to Server."


The options on the dialog box are:


Revert to Server

Try Again

Ignore


Syncing in general is working, i.e., items added in either system show up as they should. And, I'm not actually changing anything on the items on my MBA. The error pops up apparently randomly--so far, at least, I haven't been able to identify a pattern. I've checked credentials, which seem to be correct, and I've verified that time zone settings are turned on as I think they're supposed to be.


Any ideas?

I also experianced this problem after an upgrade to Mountain Lion.


I think it has to do with the fact that in Lion the account settings were managed from iCal, and now they are managed by the OS?


Anyway I finally solved it by:

  • Open Calendar (formerly iCal).
  • Go to the Calendar menu and select Preferences.
  • Select the Accounts tab.
  • Remove the Exchange server account which is giving you the error messages. This calendar will be removed from the Calendar app.
  • Go to System Preferences and click on the "Mail, Contacts & Calendars" pane, find your Exchange server account, and check the "Calendars & Reminders" option to re-enable your calendar.
  • Your Calendar should now sync properly.

I had to do this for all of the accounts I had set up in Calander, and haven't had any problems since.

+1 -- only happened after upgrade to Mountain Lion. Have tried the time zone support, deleting all Exchange accounts in Calendar, Mail, Notes and Contacts, and then adding again through the system prefs. It'll work for about a day or two, and then the problem returns. Events show up just fine on the iPad and iPhone, but problems with iCal.


I have Outlook for Mac 2011 on my machine and no sync problems. But I hate being forced to use it.


I'm using 10.8.1.

I have been having these issues since 10.7. I just recently got a new MacBook Pro Retina. I did NOT migrate my data, because I wanted to see if we were still seeing these issues. So from a fresh install, I connected Callendar.app to my Exchange 2010 + SP1 environment (no rollup updates or anything other than SP1). I still get the same thing:


- Calendar can't save the event "<event name here>" to the Exchange server.

- The account "<calendar name here>" currently can't be modified. To discard your changes and continue using the version of your calendars that's on the server, click Revert to Server.


I called apple support and was immediately "transfered" to microsoft support. But in reality, they simply transfered me to Microsoft Professional Servers so that I can could pay $500+ to have them look into my Exchange Server.


I called back and spoke to another person at Apple. They informed me that they don't "support" servers. I explained to them that this is not an Exchange Server issue, but rather a "Calendar.app" issue. This is a read-only calendar that I am connecting to as a delegate. The Calendar.app should NOT be trying to "save an event to the exchange server."


This was terrible support from Apple... I hope they fix this issue.

I know that on mine, another issue that crops up is that Calendar seems to erroneously attempt to turn an appointment into a meeting with invites. I can see this when I open the events in Outlook on my Windows machine: right after an appointment time passes, I get an error and then I can look at the meeting in Outlook and see that the "Invites" field is now active but empty. This ONLY happens when I'm connected to Exchange on my MBA.


Perhaps the error is related to Calendar trying to change the meeting type, and you might get it on yours all the time because it's a read-only calendar. That doesn't explain why I get the same error where I have rights to change the events, but...

Similar problems started appearing for me weeks after installing 10.8.2, suggesting another triggering cause. I have tried various fixes suggested in this and other threads, with no success. Besides treating meetings as invites I get multiple invitations for every appointment in my calendar - sometimes as many as a dozen sent to my email account.

I don't know of any current support issues opened with Apple. My issue was resolved by deleting the Exchange meeting and resetting it up to only repeat for 6 months. So maybe Calendar.app has a bug in that it can't sync past 6 months or so?


The other issue that I am having now with Calendar on 10.8.2 is that CalendarAgent is consuming all my memory. This laptop has 16G of ram. It seems to be the case that when I close my laptop for the evening, CalendarAgent starts consuming both cpu and memory resources. I just opened it this morning and read your message about this Exchange Sync issue and noticed that I was 11G into swap! The workaround is simply to Force Quit the CalendarAgent and then swap returns to a reasonable 1-2G (my real memory goes down tremendously too).


I need to open an issue on that CalendarAgent issue, but just haven't had time. When I called Apple regarding the Exchange sync issue, they told me to hold and forwarded me to MS support 😟

I have been seeing the same problem and also tried all the fixes, including deleting my calendar settings and setting them up again. That does fix it, or a short period of time. I also deleted the specific events causing the problem in question and recreated them, and that also fixes it. For a short period of time.


All the events I am having this problem with are actually on my wife's shared calendar (it does not do it with my events on my calendar), but she has the same problem with events on my calendar she shares with me. And like someone else mentioned, the problem appears to be related to events with no end date in sight. My wife sets up lots of those of things she does regularly so they go into the future forever (until she changes them or decides not to do them), and it is only those events that seem to be having the problems, at least right now.


I sure hope there is a fix for this as it is extremely annoying!

I do have a similar problem. My calendar syncs but only old objects up unitl about 6-7 months ago. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I also get a small notification next to my exchange calendar in the left frame of calendar but I can not make out why. Is ther anyony who can tell me where I can find the similar windows in calendar as I can get in mail with the connection information and activity reports?

Still no resolution. Like others, deleting and recreating the account does not make a difference. In fact, behavior is exactly the same on two different Mountain Lion machines connecting to the same Exchange account. And given that this had worked fine prior to the OS upgrade, on both machines, suggests to me that this is very clearly a Mountain Lion issue and not a Microsoft issue as some Apple folks seem to believe.


I had a suspecion that reminders have something to do with the problem but I haven't quite pinpointed yet.

It wasn't Mountain Lion that did it to me — started when we switched Exchange hosts this summer. Though maybe that just means Apple was already getting it wrong in Lion. I dunno.


In any event, I'm not ready to let Microsoft off the hook as long as that monstrosity known as Outlook (Windows) is involved.


Meanwhile, we've got two iPads and an iPhone connected to that same calendar and they don't have any problems. I still don't get why iOS has to use ActiveSync and the Mac doesn't, but maybe we'd be better off if it did…

I have the same issue as most of the other posters. Nothing I've tried has made a lasting difference. The same Outlook/Exchange account works perfectly with my iPhone. This has got to be a hint about waht the underlying problem is - or how to solve it. Anybody have any new ideas?
