2012 Retina Macbook Pro WiFi problem

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina display that's been upgraded to Mountain Lion. It is having WiFi connection issues.

Specifically,

1. Upon startup it will not find the network. I have to turn off the wifi and turn it back on to have it find the network. Annoying. It used to happen only intermittently; now it happens every start up. It's getting worse.

2. It will randomly every few hours drop the wifi connection, requiring me to turn off the wifi and turn it back on.

I've tried the one fix people on here suggested: deleting the wifi network profile I use and putting it back in.

Didn't make a difference.

Has anyone found a better fix?

I'm disappointed that Apple released this version of OS with such a glaring problem. A laptop without a reliable wifi connection is a complete waste of money.

Ipad, iPhone OS 3.1.3

It has been working fine since I did this, I had no more WiFi issues anymore...

I can't really understand what you mean with driver issue with Apple... and why you wrote ^^spam...

Do you have a macbookpro Retina with wifi issues ? have you spent hours and hours looking for a fix ? have you lost hours talking to Apple support trying to find a solution ? have you tried to have your HW changed by Apple ? Have you tried the fix I was lucky to find on the other site ?

I personally have lost a ridiculous number of hours with this problem and I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown when I tried this... and since yesterday night, this **** computer works like a charm...

I spent hours there with two "Genius" Guys two days ago, they swapped my MBPR.. if they knew it was simply a driver issue, would they swap the HW ?

And, to be honest.. the new HW seems to be have less sensitivity than the old one, so I lost quality during the swap, so I was better off before !!!

I have nothing to gain by telling people here what made my MB working again... except that I would have liked to find the solution if somebody had it... This is what I believe Internet is good for.

So LGats, I never said this on a forum before, but this time, I truly believe that you missed a good opportunity to say nothing...

For the others... If you still follow this Thread... if you still have issues, and like me, have the very latest HW, have ML 10.8.3 with all updates, and still lose WiFi, give this a go, it takes 2 minutes, and it is only a backup... in my case, problem solved...

Hi Charles,

Thanks for your updates, the last few days my computers have been working fine wirelessly with ML, i had done some minor fiddling, re set some things in Airport Utility & repaired the permissions on each machine running ML but nothing i thought would make a major improvement to the wireless problems i was experiencing, however if the problems return as i guess they will i will certailnly try the fix you have recommended ( thanks for posting ! )

Good luck !

Hi Michael,

This is no problem, I was lucky enough to find this elsewhere and see it working. It is still working now, even in very poor network conditions, the same conditions when the very same HW / SW was having issues each 5 secs.

Now, at least, it is working.

I can see that the new HW which was given to me by apple is not performing as well as my initial MBPR, and I may bug Apple about this, but it works now !!!!

I hope this will help others !!

Regards

Charles

Hi Michel,

Let me recap, because I did it twice before it actually worked... I didn't read the post well the first time

rename /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.backup

This was very easy to follow, and check that it was done correctly, in finder, you should not see

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration anymore...

shutdown the machine

I mean completelly, not a restart..

while off, hold Shift-Control-Option-Power for 8 seconds then release

this was meant to clear the SMC, although it could be done for a shorter period of time, but this is important !! You can read the page indicated below, it contains useful information.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

Start your machine and Log on

It should work now.

I was very surprised, Happily surprised, but it still works fine today, even in poor WiFi conditions. My MBP is a Retina 13", 8Gb, 128Gb. The "Genius" guy actually told me where to find SSDs to replace mine to get a bigger one, I was too stingy to buy a bigger one when I bought the computer, and 128 is definitelly far too small !! Next one will be 4 times bigger.

The Retina is the only MBP I had the problem with.

Please let us know. And if others could give some feedback, it would be great too.

My wifi connects perfectly to a Belkin router only when Bluetooth is disabled. As soon as I enable BT and connect my Apple BT Key Board and trackpad...wireless doesn't work. It now gets worse I have started to develop dead pixels on the MBPr 15...I think I got a dud so going to have to swap it out as no responsibility from Apple to try and fix this well documented problem.

Very interesting situation. Yesterday I tried to connect my wifi to a 2.4GHz network. There I had connection losts about every 5 minutes. Just a few minutes ago I had the possibility to connect my MBP to a 5GHz network without problems. So as long as my wifi antenna is connected to a 5GHz network, I do not have any disconnection problems.

Is there someone else who has the same symptoms?

I have a 15" 256GB Retina MacBook Pro, 500GB i3 2011 iMac, 64GB Black AT&T iPhone 5, and a Black 64GB iPad 3.

My iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro are having major wifi issues. And I don't know if it's my router, modem, or Comcast/Xfinity. We have the latest Apple Airport Extreme. A DOCSIS 3.0 telephony modem. And our download speed should be 50mbps and our upload speed should be 10mbps. Usually my iPhone will connect and just time out. My MacBook Pro sometimes can use the internet that it is connected to. My iMac seems to have the best luck with its connection.

So I'm not sure what it is, but this all started right around the time we got a new DOCSIS 3.0 telephony modem in February (apparently when we switched our DOCSIS 3.0 internet modem to a telephony modem, we were given a DOCSIS 2.0 telphony modem, so we got a new one a few days later that was DOCSIS 3.0. Ever since we got that new DOCSIS 3.0 telephony modem, my internet has not worked.).

It appears I'm not the only one having wifi issues with my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Pro though. So I thought I'd come here for support.

Thanks.

Not sure if this is a fix or not, its too early to tell.

But i've been having Wifi issues aswell for quite some time on my retina 2013 and today i tried that renaming thing

( rename /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration.backup + SMC reset )

Afterwards my mac for the first time in a long time did not repeatedly disconnect from wifi...
so i started streaming and downloading stuff to push it and see if it really was fixed that easily, and it seemed to work great, for 3 hours, but after 3 hours of streaming multiple 720p videos, the computer was getting hot so i went to GFXCardstatus and switched it over to force integrated graphics.

2 Seconds later if not instantly, internet died.

Tried reconnecting to wifi and it didnt really work, set gfxcard back to automatic and shut down the program, internet comes back. IDK if theres something in GFXCardstatus that also affects some other HW in the mac but to me, right now, it seemed related, and i know alot of people use it because really, i dont want to use my gfx for common browsing just because a webpage has a plugin on it that activates the non integrated card.

Ohwell, if you're having problems, and are using gfxcardstatus, its worth a try not using it.

I have had a MBP 15" for coming up to 2 months now and I have been on windows for my whole life so it has been a bit of learning curve to get used to it. I have bootcamp so I have a windows partition for gaming and I have been online for hours without a problem but sometimes I am watching lovefilm or youtube on mac and everything just stops but it says it is still connected to the internet. A couple minutes of waiting and then the web browsers tells me I am no longer connect so I end up having to turn my wifi on the mac off and on to get it working again.

This is getting very fustrating especially as it is brand new and has been able to do everything so far but having to reset the wifi every 5 mins or 5 times a day is really getting on my nervs, not impressed by such an expensive bit of tech not being able to stay connected to the internet.

I have just updated to 10.8.4 with minor improvements.

Have a Retina 15" Wifi works fine at home and almost everywhere except at work. The big difference is that it is a big building with more than 40 Wifi SSID. Seems to get worse after some time of use the Mac.

We have 7 Macbook att office and only the newley installed are fine the other disconnects all the time (only stable for 1-2 minutes).

This is how the Wifi looks like in diagnositcs:

User uploaded file

Signal goes crazy and Wifi disconnects then it connects again after some minute, then it goes wild again.

All non Mac computers connect just fine.

My iPhone is having similar issues at the office. I brought my stable Wifi router to work and there the connection is not stable any more. Some how the interference from the other networks are causing problem?

User uploaded file

I will try the solution from CharlesfromMC tomorrow.

We have tried every possible combination of Wifi settings on the routers that we have tried.
