I found a fix, get an HP...
That's a good theory, but how do you launch Acitivity Finder to check processes when nothing responds? When I go to launch an app when waking up and the app icon just bounces and bounces until I finally hard restart the computer. This even happens when I try to restart the Finder.
I've noticed that my iMac is trying to finish up a Time Machine backup when 'freeze waking' also. It says it's in the clean-up stage.
I have found that waking up my Macbook and logging in BEFORE I unplug it seems to stop my 're-sleep' issue.
Not the ideal fix but hopefully this works for some of the rest of you.
Good luck with your HP...
Just had my 2nd occurance of a hang after wakeup from sleep on my mid-2010 iMac 21.5", only upgrade was memory from 8G to 12G 3-4 months ago. It came with Snow Leopard, upgrades to Lion and Mountain Lion, never had a problem. Upgraded to iTunes 11 on 1st day available, before 1st hang occurance. Hang just happened again but this time I checked the log and found:

iTunes was open and when I tried to command-Q nothing but spinning wheel, Activity Monitor wouldn't start, same as before but I don't recall iTunes being open. The apps listed in Force Quit on 1st occurance were Software Update and Activity Monitor. However after buying an Apple TV I tend to leave iTunes open and running as I not only watch movies, but also play music through the Apple TV connected to my Yamaha A/V receiver.
Opened up that file which was just a bunch of thread and binary image information, nothing I could discern as being a *cause*.
Next time this happens I will check the ASL and hopefully it will be iTunes again, regressing iTunes wouldn't be a big issue for me since it didn't seem to be ready for prime time anyway.
Quite some time passed and since my first reply i re-installed Moutain Lion, installed an SSD disk with a fresh Mountain Lion installation and still ran into the issue in both cases.
Now since i'm abroad for a while i don't have my TimeCapsule with me i decided to disable TimeMachine and what suprise? No crash since then...
This is for sure not a final solution but might help some of you work around the boring crashes.
I did the same thing as you suggested and it works smoothly. updating firmware takes only about 5 minutes in total.
