Facing the same issue since a couple of OSX versions. I mostly run into this issue when Chrome is/was open, so i guess http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=112544 might cause this.
Just had the same thing happen. Upgraded on Saturday. Everything was fine until today. It's not actually frozen since the clock is still moving. But none of my input devices work. However, I can SSH to it so I did this: http://superuser.com/questions/258827/how-to-reboot-another-mac-via-terminal then I had to re-discover all my bluetooth devices.
Looks like my bluetooth devices decided to pair with my wife's computer downstairs. So I may not have experienced the same thing you did.
Yep. I have the same problem. The display freezes for a few seconds before it lets go of the trackpad and keys. It started when I upgraded to mountain lion.

I have seen one person report something similar due to some bad fonts. The "fontworker" process was exhausing memory and taking all the CPU. Bring up Activity Monitor, set it to show All Processes and sort by CPU. When you wake form sleep the next time, see if there is anything amiss.
You can also try a little diagnostic program I wrote to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.
Experiencing similar issues on mid 2011 mini 2.3 i5 with 8 GB ram, mountain lion upgraded from lion. Sometimes locks up with only black screen, have also seen a pixelated/jumbled login screen. Mouse movement is recognized but not keyboard or mouse click input (both apple BT products). The mini is hardwired into Airport Extreme, wi-fi is disabled.
Not sure if this is a related issue but have third party external drive attached via USB 2.0 for time machine. When the mini does wake properly form sleep I get an error that the drive was not ejected properly.
Forgot to mention that it always requires a hard reboot after freeze/lockup.
I have the exact same problem from time to time. Have to do a hard reboot after it freezes up.
My issue is specific to waking after sleep, it wont. have to reboot. Apple has been very helpful in working with me on this problem but we still have not resolved the issue. After a month of research and trial and error we know that it is not a software since. I have installed 'Snow Leopard" on a new drive, starting fress. Even with Snow Leopard, same problem. I have different memory now, still same. I took out all the old drives, still same problem. Talking to apple today they say it might be a "firmware" update issue. I’m waiting to hear back next week after my rep consults the engineers again.
Fixed in 10.81
Im running the current version 10.8.1 update didn't fix the problem. but thanks,
I also have the same issue. Both of my 27" mid-2011 iMacs are doing it. I just disabled sleep mode today.
It happened immediately after installing Mountain Lion last week. I am running 10.8.1.
Has there been any word on a fix for this?
Same thing here. After installing M.L. my latest model iMac freezes after sleep mode. The colored ball is staying forever. Only solution is a hard reboot.
I can confirm that 10.8.1 does NOT solve the problem.
My friend has a MacBook Pro. Installed M.L. last week and ... same trouble after sleep mode !
I have the strange feeling that OSX is getting worse after every new version.
The apple rep called me last Friday, He suggested that I take out my update memory and replace it with the origanal memory that came with the computer. Did that but still have same issue, didn't fix it. The next step and last stpe is to acually take my computer in. Funny that it would be a hardware issue, especially because the problem occured right after I installed Mountain Lion, worked perfectly before then.
I have similar problem as bclaypoo. I have a 2012 Macbook Air. At apparently random times (I can't figure out a pattern) the login screen freezes upon waking up from sleep. Only solution is hard shut-down. The last couple of days it is getting more and more frequent, so it has become frustratingly annoying.
--Here's the thing for me: This started when I had Lion. I had naively hoped that Mountain Lion would fix it, but no such luck Then I hoped 10.8.1 would help, no luck, and as I say, it is just getting worse. So I'd love to hear suggestions. I thought maybe "power sleep" could be the culprit but I have deactivated that. Happens when Bluetooth is off. Stopped running Chrome browser even though it is my favorite. Tried shutting down google notifier too, no help.
I sometimes wonder if it turning off wireless before going to sleep each time would help, haven't tried it.
