You're not alone in that assessment. The MAS delivery system leaves a lot to be desired.

option+click in the App Store does not work for me - it says I can't download Lion because I have installed a newer version of the OS! Same when I try to reinstall Snow Leopard from the DVD.

Does anybody know WHY Apple have made it impossible to downgrade?

Because they want everyone to embrace the iOSification of computers? That's my SWAG.

If you have a bootable backup/clone of SL or Lion, boot with that, unmount the ML volume, and try OPTION-click in MAS again. Alternatively, boot with the SL disc and install onto an empty volume/partition/disk.

Indeed, our choices are boiling down to an iPhone, iPad, iPod, 21.5" iPhone, or 27" iPhone.

That's the normal progression path. However, do you mean going the other way, which is the thrust of this thread?

No, I want to go to Lion from Snow Leopard but cannot find it for sale. I read on this thread that Lion was not available, so I was asking. I realize people are wanting to go back to Lion. Now I am wondering if I even want to go to Lion.

Apple said that customers can still purchase a copy of Snow Leopard or Lion from its online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

Why is Apple making this info so obscure???

Because they're trying to push everyone into the iOS camp by only offering ML to their users; either by forcing them to upgrade or buy new machines w/o FW and optical media readers/writers? If you don't stay connected, you're not with it or modern enough. They detest people who refuse to jump into the newest and most fashionable. As Jobs was want to say, computers should be throwaway appliances.

The way Apple is going, I do not care to continue purchasing their products. Also ML is lousy and makes my macs slow. Lion was still a good product. Sorry I upgraded. I will not believe what they will say anymore when they have a newo product. I am very decieved. I doubt Jobs wanted this, after all the great things he showed us.

And with MS going to the useless Windows 8, that means Computers are about dead & gone. 😟

Wanting to do the same thing. If I am somehow able to get Lion again, do I need to remove ML or will Lion automatically replace it?

If your machine came with Lion installed, rebooting, holding down CMD+OPT+R, should allow restoring Lion. If that works, ML will be gone. If you retained a copy of the ML installer, ensure it's saved to a safe location, so you don't have to waste resources DLing it again.
