Boy, Apple's gone of the deep end, they no longer offer Lion, but if you bought it on the App Store you can redownload it. 😟

Ok so downgrading isn't an option.

After downloading the old OS it wouldn't let me install it.

I took my computer into Apple who said that it was my RAM that the they thought was most likely to be causing the problem based on my Kernel Reports being so varied. I upgragded the RAM 7 months ago so I just put my old apple ram of 4gb back in.

So far so good. Fingers crossed.

hey, is this really working? sorry for question like this, i'm new to mac and i dont want to screw something up.

Which? All I can suggest is to try the steps I and others have posted. I have bootable installations of three OSs, plus their clones, so I have no problems running any of them or reinstalling. Peruse these and updating and upgrading becomes a breeze:

Ok. I just don't get any of this.

I have ML and I want to go back to Lion, mainly because I'm a student and there is a program called Examsoft that I need to run for exams. There is a ML version but the only reason I can't use it is because my school needs to upgrade their software on their end for it to work. It's a long story and I don't want to bore you guys. I just need to downgrade to Lion. That's it.

I bought a MBP last May that came with Lion pre installed. When ML was released I upgraded. I tried to reboot with OPT CMD and R and saw the Lion software come up. However I couldn't reinstall because it said a newer version of the OS is already installed.

Please if you have time, provide me with a step by step procedure to get Lion back. I know it may involve reformatting and I'm ready for that. I have no backup image with Lion and I dont use time machine because all my important docs are on Dropbox. I don't really use the HD space for anything except WoW and iTunes as needed. Thanks in advance.

sir if your os is with a built in mountain lion os you cannot downgrade it because the new macbook has a software that prevent the user to format the drive and protect the drive from being downgraded... but if your os only have a built in lion os you can downgrade it by using a bootable device.. first format your hardisk using disk utility and install your lion.

The ultimate solution:

You need an USB of at least 5 GB and the Snow Leopard Install DVD.

1. make a bootable USB with Disk Utility in it:

a. download the Mountain Lion Installer from the App Store

b. quit the installer after download

c. find the installer in the Applications folder

d. option+click in it and select "Show Pakage Contents"

e. go to Contents>SharedSupport to find there the InstallESD.dmg file and mount it by double-clicking it

f. with the Disk Utility, restore its contents into your USB

2. boot from the USB:

a. restart the computer and hold-down the option key while booting

b. select the USB and boot

3. run the Disk Utility and format in ONE partition the HD of your computer

REMEMBER: BACKUP YOUR HARD DISK BEFORE DOING ALL THESE, YOUR DISK WILL BE EREASED AND DATA BECOME UNRECOVERABLE OTHERWISE

4. insert the Snow Leopard DVD and reboot from it

5. follow the on-screen instructions to install OS X 10.6

After this, you can, if you will, upgrade to Lion or stay in Snow... Good Luck!!

Boy I thought Lion was bad but ML sounds even worse. I was about to upgrade, but I think I'll wait.....

I'm sorry, what is so bad about OSX 10.8? Of the three macs I have, two run 10.8 and the third which can't run the newest OS splits its time between 10.7, and various Linux flavors. I mean I understand being especially partial to "legacy" software because you are used to it or payed a bunch for it, but if a developer cant be bothered to update a piece of sofware to ensure compatability in what, 5 or 6 years, I'm not sure that the relic software is worth the trouble.
Basically, if you want an OS that is compatable with everything, that you can run 10 year old software on, try windows. If you want a computer that is constantly updating in order to be on the bleeding edge of security, and that with time, effort and a little hacking, you can make just about anything run... Try Linux. If you want something that is pretty secure, works like clockwork, and keeps you out of trouble, keep your mac updated to the latest OS it can run. If your mac can only run an OS which apple has stopped supporting (also called EOL or EOS), for instance the PPC G5 thats sitting in my garage, its time to update.
