"An unknown error has occurred" when logging in to App Store

Hi.

I have a valid Apple ID and I have been running Mountain Lion from the day it was released. Starting today I can no longer log in to the App Store. I get "An unknown error has occurred".

I have done the usual bits: checking ermissions, trashing preferences and the cache file, but to no avail.

Any tips would be appreciated.

all best,

You really do have a point. A manual download is needed more frequently than Apple realizes. This thread is a perfect example. I urgently need to update my server components on my newly upgraded ML system as ML disables all server functionality. I knew that would happen, of course. But what I didn't know would happen was the fact I couldn't log on to app store because of this farking "an unknown error has occured" bullcrap. There's no other way for me to get the file now because if I go to the other system, it's already installed. *VERY* frustrating.

Oh, and the guy's suggestion below (the network.plist bit) doesn't work at all for me. Grr. :/

I'm having the same issue on an iMac with 10.7.4. Mac Mini, iPad and iPhone all work fine with App Store. Spoke with tech support. They suggested reloading OS. I did, but only change was that Safari kept crashing. Reloaded Time Machine backup to get browser working again. Very frustrating!

I tried the plist change you described, but no change with the unknown error. I did notice that IOBuiltin was in that file four times. Only the third one was false, did change it to true, but didn't help. Any suggestions?

I also had/have this issue. I look on other threads and deleted the com.appstore. files and db and plist

and I even deleted the appstore.app from the applications folder (using "app delete") and then dragged it back to the applications folder.

I even deleted the NetworkInterfaces.plist flie

and then rebooted.

none of this worked.

finally I tried logging into the itunes store and it was successful. Then when I started appstore it already had me logged in from the itunes store.

But I wonder if this will continue. And why can't I log into the appstore directly? I get "an unknown error has occured"

Here is a step-by-step of what worked for me:

  1. Create a new user account - let's name it "Test" - I did not make this an administrator account
  2. Log into that new user account (skipping the AppleID/iCloud screen)
  3. Select "Software Update…" from the Apple menu - you will be asked to enter an administrator name and password in or to check for system updates - just provide your normal (admin-enabled) user name and password
  4. If you have any updates available, click "Update All" and log into the AppStore with your normal AppleID/password (this should work since you are in a new user account)
(If you don't have any updates available, I assume that you can also log in using the menu item in the Store menu of the AppStore application though I have not tried that)
  5. As soon as the download starts, you can quite the AppStore application
  6. Log out of your test account and back into your normal account
  7. Open /Applications/Utilies/Terminal
  8. Type the following command:
    sudo cp /Users/test/Library/Cookies/com.apple.appstore.plist Library/Cookies/
  9. Open the AppStore again and you should be able to log back in

What does this do? It seems that the com.apple.appstore.plist file in your normal user account has become corrupted - we use a new account and create a new one (which is interchangebale since we use the same AppleID) and move that one back to the main account with the corrupt file.

Is it possible that Windows based SSL functionality can have/face similar issues? I have an apple-id that will let me purchase and share on my local network, but when I try to use it from any computer in my network to log into this support community, I get "An Unknown Error Has Occurred" at the login screen after being reprpmpted for a password which works to log me in when money is involved.

This problem "vanished" mysteriously for me when someone at Apple web page management/development made formatting changes to the web site and updated the page! My guess is that they had released code with a script problem or that was using an obsolete library, and the new "version" of the page eliminated the issue.

That was coincidence then. You don't get on the phone with a Dev at Apple who can make any changes to the production environment. Any changes whatsoever are run through greenlight, logged in source-code management, tested, deployed to Test, then pre-production, and then to production. In fact, developers can't even hit production machines for what I would consider obvious reasons.

What you are suggesting didn't happen. Were there any other changes you made that you can think of? I still have this problem...

The only thing I can think of which might have changed was somthing in the network. The TCPIP lease my gateway held in the Comcast DNS most likely expired and was renewed at least once over the period I was having issues. It could not have been something like a browser cookies issue since it was occurring on every machine and brower I tested (3 windows boxes, win7, win Vista, and Win XP, as well as Safari on an iPad 1) I did note that the menu of support community menu options below the login screen where the "An unknown error has occurred" changed at the same time that the problem "went away." I don't think I emptied my browser cache on every computer I tested, but now they all work and before they all failed.
