Genius Bar Can't Replicate Problem - What Now?

Hi,

I have had an issue with my iMac where it freezes and there are consistently 3 loud beeps over and over or sometimes a very loud screeching noise. I have seen a few people saying this is a RAM issue but the problem i have is the Genius Bar couldn't replicate my problem and within 2 hours of me dropping it off they said i need to come and colelct it again.

What can i do now? When i contact Apple it always says i have to take it to the nearest Genius Bar so if they can't do anything what are my options?

Also, is there anyway perhaps static/ overheating/ interference from other devices could be the sole problem? The reason i ask is that is my iMac at home has this problem and then the other day my girlfriends brand new Macbook Pro started doing the same thing... however, in other places (e.g Genius Bar) this does not seem to happen and is very hard to replicate.

Therefore could there be an external factor influencing it?

Thanks,

Martyn

Bump.

Is anyone able to help me? My main issues are Apple can't replicate the issue with my Mac so what can i do? They said repair is impossible... Will they exchange it?

Furthermore, my Mac has issues in my bedroom but i've never had issues anywhere else... Could it be some other variable Apple can't test for? Overheating, static etc? I'm not sure how i can gauge this as it doesn't feel extremely hot but does feel hot.

Any help would be great.

Which iMac? When was it bought? Does it have AppleCare extended plan? Do note that for desktops with AppleCare, if you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. BTW, before taking it home, have them fire it up and see if you can get it to act up.

Mid 2010 i3.

I have Applecare and i cannot replicate the problem and i have tried so many things that i (and they) have given up. They said they cannot repair it so my i'm trying to look at other solutions... Can i get a replacement with diagnosis? Could static or some other factor play a part in it due to it only happening in certain environment? Etc.

Thanks

I'd try running memtest to test the RAM. The "Geniuses" may not have had the patience or interest in testing the RAM long enough. Finding RAM errors can be very tricky. The next time it freezes, see if there are any messages in Console in Utilities from around the time of the freezes. Look in system.log and scroll through elsewhere to find anything under "Diagnostic." Copy them if they exist and and show them those.

To test the memory, get memtest and run it in single user mode, where it will test as much memory as possible, more than with the OS loaded.

You can get memtest + directions from the link below. However, ignore running it from Terminal. Instead, boot into SU Mode, Cmd-s at the startup chime. (Best to startup from a full shutdown.)

At the prompt, simply type /usr/bin/memtest all 3 -L Observe case and spaces.(From this link It will be installed in /usr/bin/) Then hit return. This will run three loops of memtest and create a log in Console in Utilties.

If you want to run memtest longer, which may be advisable, since RAM errors can be very elusive, just remove the "all 3" which will give you /usr/bin/memtest -L and hit return. It will keep testing until you quit it.

If you want to quit the test, just hit control-c

When finished, you can just type in "reboot" and hit return.

Thanks to all the replies so far - I have previously posted about this before taking it to an Apple store as WZZZ offered suggestions then. Here is the previous topic to shed any more light:

Also i used Rember that time so this evening i will try memtest.

BDAqua: When you say check my AC outlets what do you mean? For potential surges? At the store they didn't use anything that was mine as they said if i left anything i risked them losing it, so they literally just took the Mac itself (not even the cable).

Thanks

It is possible that something in your environment is causing or contributing to the problem.

How often does the problem happen? Is there anything you can do to get the problem to happen? When the problem happens do you notice anything happening in the environment (lights dim or flicker, room is warmer then usual, etc)?

Try placing the computer in a different location for a time to see if the problem occurs. A different room would be best. Do you have the computer plugged directly into the wall socket? Getting a surge protector might be something to try.

As a last resort if you have a way of videoing taping (iPhone or other device) then recording the system while the problem is happening and showing that to the technicians might be helpful.

good luck

The problem is very random. It can happen perhaps 3 or 4 times a day or go a few days or a week without happening. I have tried to force it to happen and cannot replicate it. Nothing noticeable happens when it occurs but my room is quite hot and can get very hot in the summer (it is boiling right now - however, it hasn't happened yet today). Furthermore i have a lot of electronics in close proximity to it (my room is quite small).

I have had the Mac in other environments where i don't remember it ever happening so this is why i think maybe something in my room is causing it. Also, it is plugged into an extension. Unfortunately i cannot move it permanently as a solution, as this is the only place i can really keep it, so this is why i am trying to narrow down the possible causes / environmental factors.

That is a good idea, i will try videoing it next time as at least that would also be proof i am not lying!

Thanks,

Martyn
