Time Machine won't back up onto Time Capsule

I upgraded to Mountain Lion last week, and Time Machine won't back up to my Time Capsule. When it fails, I get the message:

Time Machine couldn't complete the backup to "Tom's Time Capsule".

The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 60)

I sometimes get the same message, but with "error 17"

I also get the following error message popup (even though the disk is the one in my Time Capsule):

The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

The popup offers three choices: Initialize, Ignore, Eject.

My local Apple Store Genius concluded that the problem must be with the Time Capsule, so I bought a new one. That didn't fix the problem.

Time Machine Buddy messages:

Starting manual backup

Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Tom%20McAuliffe@Toms-Time-Capsule.local/Data

Mounted network destination at mount point: /Volumes/Data using URL: afp://Tom%20McAuliffe@Toms-Time-Capsule.local/Data

Creating disk image /Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundle

Error 60 creating backup disk image

Failed to create disk image /Volumes/Data/TomsMac.sparsebundle, status: 60

Backup failed with error: 20

Failed to eject volume /Volumes/Data (FSVolumeRefNum: -108; status: -47; dissenting pid: 0)

I did Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk and everything's OK.

I erased the Time Capsule using AirPort Utility and did a hard reset on the Time Capsule.

I did a re-install of Mountain Lion and that didn't fix anything.

My MacBook Pro is accessing the Time Capsule wirelessly, as it always has.

Help!

Seeing the same thing on my mid-2012 MacBook Air backing up to a Time Capsule. The MacBook Air is running 10.8.1.

I've dug into the console output and noticed one difference on the attempt to mount the TC.

If using WiFi the console line is:

2012-08-24 8:55:57.504 PM com.apple.backupd[822]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Rick%20Marejka;AUTH=SRP@kamakiriad.local/Dahlias

and it fails.

If cabled the console line is:

2012-08-24 8:49:18.325 PM com.apple.backupd[822]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://Rick%20Marejka@kamakiriad.local/Dahlias

and it works.

Note that the only difference is the AUTH=SRP directive in the URL when using WiFi.

Now if only the original poster would kindly note the Keychain entries that were defective.

Sorry for the long delay - extended travel made it impossible to reply earlier. I deleted all the Time Capsule Base Station related keychain entries, then opened AirPort Utility and re-entered the password and made sure that "Remember this password in my keychain" was checked.

One other related item: While my backup ability was restored, they had been taking forever over my WiFi network, and many of them not going to completion. So I recently re-contacted AppleCare and learned that there is most likely a problem with the Mountain Lion WiFi protocol stack, confirming what Linc had said a few weeks ago. He recommended that I use an Ethernet cable for backups until a point release is issued that should fix the protocol problem. The backup has been working fine over Ethernet, including a 54 GB update recently (due to several hundred RAW photos I added to my hard drive).

I did a Time Machine backup over ethernet of my MBA running Lion on a new Synology DiskStation 1512+ NAS, then upgraded to Mountain Lion and encountered the same problems desribed. I went into DS and killed the afp connection for the Air, and now it's backing up fine, although it seems to have 'lost' the original backup ('oldest backup: none'). I don't know if this is fixed for good, or if I'll have the same problem again later, but thought I'd pass it along.

Thank you for this post. I'm running OS 10.7 (still) and thank my lucky stars that I still have VM Ware Fusion, from running an old program at word a few years ago that I no longer use, so I that I could run Windows on my MacBook Pro. My Time Machine was refusing to back up with similar error messages to others and I finally found this thread allowing me to delete the old sparsebundle and do a new back up, thus solving the problem.

Can someone at Apple explain to me why we can't delete a sparsebundle from the finder to solve this problem within OS X?

Geesh, but thanks to tommca and good luck to everyone without Fusion or Parallels to run Windows.

Best,

Jim
