First generation iPad 3G won't turn boot up. How can I fix it?

My iPad worked perfectly fine. Never had any issue at all. While we were on a road trip, the battery died and I didn't have a way to recharge it until about 36 hours later. It won't turn on except it to show the Apple logo every once in awhile. And that only happens if it's plugged in. If it isn't plugged in then it will sometimes display the "Please-Charge-Me" logo. I took it to the Genius Bar and all they said they could do for me is replace it for about $250. What else can I do? Please help!! Thanks!

edit 8.6.2012 6:51pm: I have tried putting the iPad in Recovery Mode. It only displays the "Please-Charge-Me" logo when not on a charger then the "Charging" logo when it is charging. It still won't ever turn on though. Help!

Well generally speaking if the Apple employee said that there is no hope, there probably isn't any hope. But try charging it first, let it charge for at least an hour or two. Then try to reboot the device and see if it will start up.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

If the iPad does start up OK, continue to charge it until it is fully charged and then go ahead and use it. You might be OK after all.

If it continues to give you problems or won't operate properly, try restoring the iPad with iTunes. If that doesn't work, then maybe the Apple Genius was right.

I had a feeling they were right but I figured I'd give this a shot. I'm still hoping they're wrong... They weren't very helpful when I was there. Not the usual Apple experience that I get when I visit the Bar. Anyways, I've probably charged the iPad for a total of about 48 hours since we've been back from the road trip. Tried hard-rebooting, putting it into Recovery Mode, and tried restoring it. The Apple Genius tried to restore the iPad but the it wasn't able to finish the restore for some reason. I can't restore it with my own computer since it won't turn on for me. Is there something else the Genius could have done to get it to turn on for him? I can't imagine the iPad would just not work at all simply because it was dead for a day and a half. I've only had it for a little more than a year...
