I likewise have been fighting am Alert Sounds bug on a 15" Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.x whereby I lose all Alert Sounds (mail, moving items to trash, Notification Center, etc) whenever the MBP is put to sleep overnight. I can fix the problem by killing coreaudiod as mentioned and have written an AppleScript to do so rather than having to start up Activity Monitor.

I think the problem may be related to PowerNap on my machine. My wife also has a 15" MBPr and does not have the problem. One difference is I have PowerNap enabled where she does not. I turned off PowerNap last night before putting the MBP to sleep and my alert sounds were still functional when I woke it up this morning. That's only a cursory test but we'll see...

Yes, it does seem to affect folks who do not have power nap available; however, at least for me - and perhaps some others - PowerNap may be what's triggering it and I thought that might be worth adding to the discussion.

I'll have a better sense after a few more days. If that's not a trigger, then I'll have to start tracking down other differences between my laptop and my wife's, which is the same model and age but with the smaller SSD and RAM configuration.

IT'S NOT SOLEY POWER NAP RELATED! I had a mid 2012 Macbook Air with 10.8 and it happened after sleep with and without power nap selected. I have also read that the same thing occurs after sleep in older computers. Recently I was using a Macbook Pro that is about 5 yrs old. It has updated Lion which is all that I can use on the computer. I have lost mail sound twice after sleep. Each time I was able to restore after quitting the coreaudiod file in activity monitor. Each time it would play all the sounds that had not played and accumulated in the cue. I have reported this to apple and they have a case file on the subject but have done nothing about it. Power Nap may play a role in the frequency the problem occurs after waking from sleep, but is definitely not the sole cause. Don't get your hopes up. It's a software glitch that is also present in the latest update of Lion as well. I don't remember this problem with earlier versions of Lion. Good luck.

Agreed that it's not SOLELY a PowerNap issue and has some deeper cause because it clearly affects Macs that are not powernap capable; however, it does seem to be a sleep related issue and perhaps primarily PowerNap TRIGGERED for at least some number of us who have PowerNap capable MacBook Pros.

As mentioned above, both my wife and I are running virtually identical machines (although we are running different background and other apps) and her machine did not have PowerNap enabled. So a starting point for me in figuring out what TRIGGERED the issue on mine but not hers was to look at those various apps, menubar items, etc. and other settings such as PowerNap. At least for me (and apparently a few others) the problem has not manifested itself - at least across 2-3 overnight sleep cycles - after disabling PowerNap.

Call it a potential workaround for some of us rather than a cure.

Marcelo/CyclingMac, never said it was SOLELY related... Only that it "appears" somehow tied together... on th MBPr it is consistent... enable PowerNap, after sleep sounds are gone... don't and days go by without issues... additionally, on my MBP late 2008... I simply never experienced this issue and still don't.

They activated this new functionality in ML it plays with disabling and re-enabling screen/network/sound during sleep... My best guess, as a professional QA tester for close to 20 years now is that it is somehow related to this particular part of code...
