Actually, there is no need to mess with the mail folders with Finder and Terminal. Just click on the disclosure triangle next to the VIPs mailbox to expose the list of names. Either:
(1) control-click on each of the names and select Remove from VIPs from the contextual menu until all the names disappear from the VIPs mailbox. Quit Apple Mail then run it again - the VIPs folder should have gone.
Or:
(2) click on each name and any mail within that name. Click on the star next to the name in the mail; the name should disappear from the VIPs mailbox. Sometime, if you deselect the star from the last name, the VIP mailbox would disappear from the left pane, or at the most, left with no disclosure triangle. If that's the case, simply quit Apple Mail and run it again - it should disappear.
I don't have a Mac Pro, I have an iMac, but all I have to do to remove the flag from a message is click on the flag icon again. Click once it puts the flag on, click twice it takes it off.
If you want to remove the flag icon from your mail tool bar, click on View in your Mail menu and under View click on Customize Toolbar.
I could fix it this way!.
1. Add another extra VIP in Apple Mail.
2. Delete the extra one from Apple Mail.
3. Delete the first one from Apple Mail.
4. Delete VIPSenders.plist as mrfcobf said.
Fixed!
Rsibs said "After removing the VIP's from the mailbox, quit mail and relaunch it holding the Shift key.
This finally worked for me. Curios, what the HECK does that do? Yes, I can search the 'net and see, but if you have a quick answer...
THANKS!
I did as stated, and got rid of the emails, but the folder itself is still very much there. And that is the one that bugs me!!!😠 Anyone??
After removing the VIP's from the mailbox, quit mail and relaunch it holding the Shift key.
Hi mrfcobf
I followed your instructions to a Tee, however, the VIP folder is still there. Not only did I close Mail, I restarted
my Mac too.
I checked and the VIP plist is gone, but the folder is still in my Mail side bar.
Urrrr, I hate this VIP folder just sitting there. I have no use for it and wish to remove it. Anymore ideas?
Hi!
I'm sort of new to this so I appreciate your patience and understanding. I have a Mac Pro and Mountain Lion. In mail box I inadvertently clicked the "Flagged" icon. It's now permanently my mailbox and I've been trying to remove it unsuccessfully. I've been searching the Apple Support Community site and found your answer regarding removing the VIP mailbox so I assumed that this should work for the Flagged mailbox. I followed your steps but it didn't work. I thought that maybe there are slightly different steps to remove the flag. I hope so.
You were the only one that provided anything close to a solution. I tried to contact you directly through the Apple community but being new to this, I didn't know how. So I addressed my problem to the whole Apple community. Now after the fact, I was able to figure out how to contact you directly. So if you see responses elsewhere, this is the reason why.
Any advise or guidance is greatly appreciated. Thank you again for your time.

Thanks for your prompt response. I had to run an errand so I completely shut my Mac Pro down. When I started it up again, Flagged was gone from my mail box. Apparently mrfcobf's solution worked but for whatever reason, just not right away.
To you (even though I didn't have to try your solution), mrfcobf's, and everyone else who may respond thank you very much.
artcalm's instructions worked for me. make sure you select another email account in Mail (ie so that the other email account is open). then the VIP folder dissppears (after you quit Mail and delete the VIPSenders.plist)
I followed Victor Pang's instructions above closely, also deleted the VIPSenders.plist from MailData. But, when I restart Mail, an EMPTY VIPs mailbox still reappears and the VIPSenders.plist also reappears in the MailData folder. After I followed Victor Pang's instructions, all the names are gone from the VIPs mailbox, but the empty mailbox is still there on the left. How can I get rid of the empty VIPs mailbox?
If I delete the VIP mailbox, will the mails that are in it still be in my normal inbox?
I don't want to "un-VIP" the senders in it because they are VIPs on my iPhone as well and it's important for that to stay the same, I just don't to have the VIP mailbox on my mac?
Thank you ! I had a bit of trouble finding the ~ on my keyboard as I have a French Canadian keyboard -
but after that, problem solved ! I do think Apple could make it easier though to delete the VIP mailbox !

Update: the VIPSenders.plist regenerates each time that Apple Mail is open (after being trashed). Even more, if I open it and delete contents with PlistEdit Pro, save it and open Apple Mail again, all is regenerated, including such deleted contents of VIPSenders.plist.
How to delete it for ever?
