Actually, there is no need to mess with the mail folders with Finder and Terminal. Just click on the disclosure triangle next to the VIPs mailbox to expose the list of names. Either:
(1) control-click on each of the names and select Remove from VIPs from the contextual menu until all the names disappear from the VIPs mailbox. Quit Apple Mail then run it again - the VIPs folder should have gone.
Or:
(2) click on each name and any mail within that name. Click on the star next to the name in the mail; the name should disappear from the VIPs mailbox. Sometime, if you deselect the star from the last name, the VIP mailbox would disappear from the left pane, or at the most, left with no disclosure triangle. If that's the case, simply quit Apple Mail and run it again - it should disappear.
I have the same problem. The VIP mailbox appeared out of nowhere and is empty but I cannot delete it. This advice looked good except that I upgraded to Yosemite a few weeks ago. BIG, BIG MISTAKE. It is complete rubbish.
I cannot find anything you mention in your advice but then I cannot find anything in Yosemite. They have completely screwed the SEARCH facility and so many other things no longer work the way they used to. I cannot find MAIL. The only MAIL I can find is MAIL SCRIPTS or the MAIL.app. LIBRARY has ceased to exist as has UTILITIES and Yosemite has messed up my MAIL SEARCH as well.
There are all kinds of other problems with Yosemite but Apple don't care. They just say re-install. Apple is getting as bad as Microsoft.
Hello, right click on it & choose Delete...
Or highlight it & from the Edit menu choose Delete...
in the edit menu the delete is grayed out and right click has no delete option for the mail box. I have Mountain Lion if that makes a difference.
I have nothing in the mail box. I created and that was it.
Hello Everybody,
I have the same problem; an empty VIP mailbox in Mail that I want to delete. How to do this?
System: Mountain Lion 10.8.1 and Mail 6.0
Cheers, Michael
Thanks for this. worked like a charm!
I tried that, but in my library folder, Mail does not show up at all.
10.8.1
Wrong library folder. This one is invisible and must be accessed as described above.
Ah - I wasn't using the "~"
Thanks.
I hate when apple automates things too much!
Hi, I'm using A macBook Pro Version 10.6.8 I can't find V 2 in ~/library. Am I in the wrong library? This VIP mailbox is on my iPhone not on my Mac Book Pro.
Thanks
John
Are you sure you quit Mail, then did as mrfcobf suggests, then relaunched mail? I accidentally did not and I saw what you are seeing.
Yes,
mrfcobf's solution dated 9/3/12 works like a charm. Thanks so much!
Important to quit from mail and to make sure VIPSenders.plist is deleted.
Then the silly VIP goes away.
Who thinks up these unnecessary things?
Thanks so much for this. Worked PERFECTLY and your instructions were so easy to follow.
thank you again.
cheers
