how do I downgrade safari 6 to 5.1.7 in Lion?

I installed Safari 6 in Lion more or less by accident. I didn't notice it in Software Update, I guess that's my bad. I really hate Safari 6, If it does load or render faster then it's not fast enough for me to notice and it is full of quirks and bugs. The tabs thing is annoying and I don't like the magic uni-bar type anything here.

I found 5.1.7 online but can't figure out how to delete Safari 6. I could go in and do it the Unix way but that may break dependencies.

Any advice would be most apprecieated.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Well, while I agree with you I'm not so certain there are that many that agree with us. However you can downgrade following the instructions.

Terminal isn't that difficult and all you need do is to copy and paste the three lines of text:

sudo rm -rf /Applications/Safari.app

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari

sudo rm -rf /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Safari.framework

Do it one at a time, pressing enter. After the first you will be prompted for your administrators password. Enter it, but note that you won't see anything on the screen as you do. Then copy and paste the next two lines one after the other.

Don't worry, this code will not screw anything else up. At very worst reinstalling Safari 6 will get you back to where you are now.

I won't wish you luck, you don't need it.

I wonder if Apple (or the dev team at Apple) is reading this thread and realizing that the majority of people I have informally polled HATE Safari 6.

I really makes me wonder if we are all just figuring ways around lame decisions. Decisions made by someone making way too much for doing way too little who would never admit that there idea was received so poorly.

Hi scottfromgilbert,

I don't think that the majority of Safari users are complaining about the new features in Safari 6. When you add new features to your software, or radicly change the look and feel of your software, there always will be people who disagree with those changes and they will stick to what they know (like we do).

I do have to admit that Apple should have done a better job at testing Safari 6 before releasing it. When I tried out Safari 6 it gave me the feeling it was still a beta version.

One side note to this whole downgrade to Safari 5 thing is that Apple does not, and will never again, provide you with an update for this browser. If a critical exploit has been found for this browser (this is exacly what happend with the recent zero day exploit for Internet Explorer) you will either have to upgrade to the newest version or start using a different browser.

For the moment I am still hapely using Safari 5, but keeping in mind that this browser will not be save anymore in the near future I have also started using different browsers so I can decide if I want to switch to Opera, Chrome, Firefox or update to Safari 6.

Best regards,

Anthonie

I agree, there isn't enough pushback on this on for Apple to do anything with Safari 6. However I'm hoping that the recent iOS 6 debacle with many people concerned with losing features (eg YouTube streaming to Apple TV), may cause Apple to think twice about removing features. However that too, could be a problem with bloatware.

I usually upgrade every second generation, so I'll likely skip mountain lion. For the browsers I've been experimenting but haven't found anything I like as much as Safari, yet.

YES!!! Worked for me & my Lion! hahah Apple Care did NOTHING! YOU GUYS solved this

Thanks So much!

Again, just copy all three lines, paste it in Terminal (and your password) and hit enter...

DONE!

Now run the Safari 5.1.7 Package and BAM! LIKE MAGIC!

Remember you MUST have Safari 5.1.7 package all ready to go before doing this. Thanks Again Guys!

This did not work for me exactly.

But I copied these three things over from an older system without Safari 6.1 and replaced Safari with 6.0.5 and then it worked.

The 6.1 update breaks PasswordBox and I am tired ot constant updates breaking things.

Software update is now turned off on my Macs.

Happy Weekend!

Sure. I was waiting StepanyanMuradyan to do it, but I just summarize here.

Press down Cmd+R when you start up your Mac. Then you select reinstall OSX Mountain Lion.

That's it. So simple.

I backed up mails, contacts, and bookmarks just in case though.

Hope this helps.
