Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have been unable to resolve this after trying many suggestions on the web. This is a Verizon IPhone 4S. Daily I get this message and it's usually when I change from 3G data to wireless or the opposite. I have no problems with data other than GMAIL. The message I get is "The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.

I am running IOS 5.1.1

The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again.

These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.

  • Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then problem returns)
  • Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)
  • Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestion
  • I am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

Go to Settings>General [Then scroll down]>Reset>Reset All Settings

None of the other fixes worked, but this worked for me on iOS 6.1.3. I doesn't erase anything, and I did not have to re-enter the gmail settings, but I did have to re-enter the gmail password.

Other settings that had to be re-entered included, the setting to use Passcode, the time before Passcode is required again after lock (because immediately is annoying) and my WiFi password.

You will probably loose other saved WiFi passwords, but it's a small price to pay to have gmail working again.

This didnt work for me. Well sort of.

It didnt fix the gmail problem. I completely deleted my profile. I re-added it. I did the reset. I still cant gmail to work. So, I logged into gmail and changed my password. I still cant add it. But here's whats weird; my iPhone 4S still has the email account on it and it still and has always worked (not upgraded to iOS6.1.3). But when I went to try and change the gmail password on the iphone the same error started again. But weirdly the email still works. For a last test I tried to add my gmail to my wifes iPad (Still iOS6.0.1 or something) and I got the exact same error there. I think this is a google issue.

As for the sort of, the reset fixed the problem I was having where my Bad Elf GPS module would not work with any mapping applications anymore. So, thanks there!

Glad you got relieve somewhere. One way to get this working regardless of what OS you're on is to simply install the Gmail app. Although I was able to get the iOS mail app to work for my client, it's not an ideal app where mail is concerned and problems with gmail and all Apple Mail versions (regardless of whether it's iOS or MacOS) are persistant.

I don't agree that this is a gmail problem. Using any other mail client (i.e. Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) or the official Gmail app for iOS or Android has no issues. There is definitely lack of cooperation between Google and Apple devs. This was brought to the surface with the recent split between Apple and Google over WebKit.

Personally I wish Apple would allow full integration of the Gmail app into iOS. It's a much more sophisticated mail app and allows users with multiple email accounts to send and receive through multiple servers, with multiple signatures by using the settings in gmail. I always recommend my clients use gmail in the browser on their Macs and the official Gmail app on their iOS or Android devices. It's different, so you have to get used to it, but once you do, the experience is so much faster and more stable, plus you can do so much more.

Sounds like you're having the same problem I had but I could be wrong. I posted on a google forum and finally got the answer. This is complicated so let me know if you need help. I had to do it for my iphone, Adium and Google notifier accounts and it fixed the password issue for all of them.

1) Use this article: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/78754?hl=en

2) Skip down to the section about clearing your CAPTCHA (while on the device that's giving you issues)

3) Even after you get the verification code it still might not accept your password.

4) After you've attempted the sign-in with your password (from the specific device within 10 minutes) and it fails, you must then click the 2-step link (from the CAPTCHA page. see attached image) that will allow you to generate a temporary password that will basically unlock that device.

5) Once you've entered that temp password, your password will still be the one you had before but you will now have access to gmail through that device.

Skio,

Tanks for the reply. You got me there in a round about way with the link above. As i was reading through it i realized I PEBCAK'd myself; I forgot I was using the Google application-specific password for the gmail account I was having trouble with. This feature of gmail generates a different password, for security reasons, for apple mail, exchange, or whichever device your granting access to. That's why it was rejecting the primary password when I went in to reconfigure.

Spence,

I can understand your liking the calendar app. A lot of my clients do for some reason that's odd to me. I personally like looking at a month view initially and getting a general idea of what's ahead. Like my old Blackberry calendar, the iOS calendar month view is just a bunch of dots when you look at. Again, a very basic application IMHO.

Check out CalenGoo for iOS and Android. You can see what's in the month calendar at a glance and pinch to zoom for more detail, among the literally hundreds of other advanced features. It's the best calendar app of the dozens I've tested on both iOS and Android. Highly customizable.

Both my MacBook Pro and iphone stopped getting Gmail through Apple Mail at the same time. I was getting ready to try some of the more involved step mentioned in the 150+ posts before this... but then I just turned off my iPhone and suddenly I was able to get Apple Mail on my MacBook Pro. I then turned on my iPhone and was able to get gmail through the Mail app there as well. Phew.

Exactly the same problem here in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil on an iPhone.
All my data work except Gmail, which does not respond; I get the same error that you report (here in Portuguese): “Não Pode Obter Correio. O servidor de correio ‘imap.gmail.com’ não está respondendo
”
On very rare occasions an e-mail or two will actually be sent or received, despite the error.

Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.
