Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have been unable to resolve this after trying many suggestions on the web. This is a Verizon IPhone 4S. Daily I get this message and it's usually when I change from 3G data to wireless or the opposite. I have no problems with data other than GMAIL. The message I get is "The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.

I am running IOS 5.1.1

The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again.

These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.

  • Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then problem returns)
  • Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)
  • Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestion
  • I am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

I have solved this on an iPad 2. I was getting the same message as in the original post, and the problem was internittent - email working some days and not others - very annoying.

1. I deleted the Gmail account in Mail on the iPad.

2. Go to 'Mail, Contacts. Calendars'

3. Go to 'Add Account...'

4. Instead of using the dedicated 'GMail' button (as I have previoiusly), use the 'other' button at the bottom.

5. Choose 'Add Mail Account'

6. Manually input your details and server settings (username, password, smtp server name etc.) as given on the Gmail IMAP settings configuration page (you can also find them in your Apple Mail preferences account settings if you have a Mac running OS X).

7. This worked for me.

It seems that there is a problem with the GMail dedicated 'button' in the Mail app in that it does does not configure Mail correctly. This must be the responsibility of both Apple and Google to sort out, I would think.

I just bought an iPad 3 & have experienced the exact same problem.

The strange thing is that the mail app on my iPhone stopped working too.

The gMail app on my iPhone continues to work flawlessly so I'm a bit reluctant to go changing settings there but on the iPad (come on) I've done everything suggested in posts found here & I still get the same error message.

Tried the gMail app on the iPad & got nothing.

I'm thinking very seriously about returning the iPad & getting an Android device instead.

Hey thernadi - can you tell me what the server settings should be (incoming and outgoing Host Names, server name)? When I entered smtp.gmail.com for the server address and pop.gmail.com for the incoming host name, it didn't work. I also tried changing the host name to smtp.gmail.com with no luck.

I'm also having issues with google notifier on my desktop. I think they'll need to post an update for notifier because I have no idea how I could find a work around for that (it won't accept my new password). I had changed my ail password when I started having the syncing issues with my phone bc I thought it might have been hacked. That didn't help and neither did rebooting, deleting the mail accounts as gas been stated here a bunch of times!

Thx in advance for the info.

thanks so much orangeheart. Do you know what the Incoming Mail Server - Host Name amd my username should be?

I'm under IMAP, have entered my account info, then I have tried this:

Incoming Mail Server

Host Name: pop.gmail.com (this didn't work so I also tried smtp.gmail.com, which also didn't work)

User Name: I entered my full email address. Should this just be my gmail name (i.e. "example" if my email was example@gmail.com)?

Password: entered my correct password

Outgoing Mail Server

Host: smtp.gmail.com

I left the rest blank

Thanks a ton!

update: I just added the Gmail app. This won't help my google notifier but at least gets me by for my phone. Thanks!

What you see is standard warning anywhere you see it you want to click continue, unless it is some **** site that gives you a virus. As far as Gmail replying to the thread - it is my fault, I have no problem with that.😝 Reason you will never see any company reply to thread like that, every person here can't connect to server for different reasons that is why no singular solution works. People who troubleshoot that kind of problems usually prefer to get paid for the job. Google provides paid service as well.
