Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.

I have been unable to resolve this after trying many suggestions on the web. This is a Verizon IPhone 4S. Daily I get this message and it's usually when I change from 3G data to wireless or the opposite. I have no problems with data other than GMAIL. The message I get is "The mail server imap.gmail.com is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in the mail Settings". See SnapShot Attached.

I am running IOS 5.1.1


The only way I can resolve the problem is to reboot the phone and it starts working again.


These are all the things I have tried to resolve it.


  • Deleted and recreated gmail account several times (works temporaily then problem returns)
  • Tried changing IMAP server from imap.gmail.com to imap.googlemail.com (works then problem returns again)
  • Tried the Google Unlock CAPTCHA suggestion
  • I am using IMAP vs Exchange account setup on the Iphone becuase I need to send email as another identity. When I switch to Active Synch it is much faster, works better, but I see no way to send as another email account using that setup. I have my personal email account forwarded to GMAIL. I also have my personal email as my primary ID in gmail. Regardless, the Iphone sends as the gmail.com account instead of my personal alias.


Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

What has happened to Apple? Recently it is just one problem after another. Hard drive failure here, fan issue there, incompatible power chords, etc, etc. Reminds me of my experiences with MSFT before I switched to Mac products. Times sure have changed. If there was a decent alternative I would leave Apple today. Ugh.


I had this gmail issue going on since Jan 13th. I can send email (although messages do not show up in the Sent folder nor do i get confirmation the email was sent) but I cannot receive email.


THE SOLUTION


To fix this I unfortunately had to delete my gmail account in ipad account settings and then add it back, keeping all the same settings. And it worked. Go figure. But, all my saved emails going back 2 years were wiped out. Thanks a lot Apple. And please don't tell me this is a gmail problem. Gmail worked fine when accessed via safari.


Gosh I'm frustrated with Apple. But for now I have to ride it out cause MSFT is no better. Dumb and Dumber.

Here it is! I finally fixed the issue! I've literally tried everything and this is what i did! I downloaded the Gmail App and setup my email account. After that, i went back to a regular pre-installed Iphone mail app and added my Gmail account information and it worked. Basically, the app Gmail app from the Apple store somehow pushed the signal to Gmail, saying Here it is, it is working account.


I've spent about 3 days to figure out what was the problem, tried everything on the net, 2-step verification, Google display capture, deleting account and setting it up again, changing the password on Gmail account. I was going nuts! And i know there are so many people out there who are also having the same issue. They get this crazy message "Cannot Get Mail - The user name or password for 'Gmail' is incorrect." It was so annoying. I hated it!


The solution to this problem is: Go to App Store on your Ipad or Iphone and search for "Gmail". Download the first one, Free version, install it and setup an email account with your existing credentials, the ones that didn't work earlier, and to your surprise, it will allow you to add your account back.


Next step is to click Settings (on your Iphone, Ipad) --> Mail, Contacts, Calendars --> Add Account --> Gmail (Enter your lovely email credentials and you will see, it is working again, just like in early days!


I hope it will solve your frustration and disappointment.

I have the same issue, and I tried all as you included this one.... but it's not working.... 😟 what's going on... This happened when I restore my old backup file to mi new replacement iPad mini... it never works on my new iPad mini, all the other mail accounts are good, all the other devices are good. all the other mail clients are good...

Annoying imap.gmail.com is not responding.
