I don't think it has anything to do with Mountain Lion, or at least is not unique to ML. My MacMini (server) does the same thing which is annoying sometimes, i.e having to shut it down twice in a row. I'm running Lion Server on my Mac Mini. I haven't tested it out yet but I have a feeling it might have something to do with the fact that I have the shutdown and startup of my Mac Minin on a schedule. Again, I haven't confirmed this by disabling the shutdown/startup schedule so it's just a guess at this point so I could be totally off regarding that. But it's definitely not unique to the Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.

I fixed the problem by changing the display in System Preferences. I have 3 HDMI ports. The first one seems to display everything in 1300 something by 800 something (I forget exact dimensions). But HDMI2 and HDMI3 display things in 1920x1080. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but.....

I changed the display to 1600x900 and it shuts down flawlessly now. Just my two cents.

Ok, this worked for me: I use a Samsung TV as a monitor. I tried to switch the HDMI cable from HDMI2 to HDMI1, then changed the resolution to 1600x900...and it works! This way, I don't have to change resolution every time, before shutting down. Not the ideal resolution as well (1360x768 should be the optimum for my monitor), but still suitable for a clear vision. Just wanted to share with you, hope this helps. And sorry for my English 😉

So I have been struggling with this issue as well for a few weeks. My mac mini server is connected to an LG HDTV as well. Force shutdown is a bad idea. Looks like, as described in earlier posts, when I change the resolution away from 1360 x 768 to 1600 x 900, the problem goes away.

Since there is no permanant fix for this, and it turns out to be a hardware issue that would need to be replaced, are we expected to pay for the replacement after apple care warranty is over? How can I get the problem on record to show that their is no fix for this during the time I am covered and should not have to pay for any repair once it is over?

Thanks.

Well so far so good for me,

I've recently bought a new tv, a full hd Samsung all singing all dancing effort and my Mac mini has shut down twice, yes you read it TWICE!!! Without incident so far,

I'm obviously going to see how it goes but, I just wanted to update you guys.

Still got my fingers crossed for a better cheaper solution though

I spoke to apple support and basically got the runaround. They told me that there haven't been any issues with mini's and shutting down. my case number is Case ID: 363939974

I'm asking all of you who have this problem to call support and discuss the problem with them. I'm hoping that if we all do so they might come up with a fix. please call support and speak of our problem.

thanks
