I don't think it has anything to do with Mountain Lion, or at least is not unique to ML. My MacMini (server) does the same thing which is annoying sometimes, i.e having to shut it down twice in a row. I'm running Lion Server on my Mac Mini. I haven't tested it out yet but I have a feeling it might have something to do with the fact that I have the shutdown and startup of my Mac Minin on a schedule. Again, I haven't confirmed this by disabling the shutdown/startup schedule so it's just a guess at this point so I could be totally off regarding that. But it's definitely not unique to the Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.
Hi all, I'm very happy to find this forum because I' struggling on the same problem since the first day of ML release... I've already:
1. been 2 to the Genius Bar where they have reinstalled ML and checked the Hardware. Nothing changed the problem still persist. They told me that the problem is new and only experienced sometimes with Macbook Pro. So no solution provided by Apple
2. disconned all the devices. It doesn't work
3. resetted PRAM and VRAM. Nothing at all
4. unistalle all the apps installe after ML. Nothing
.... Now I' bored, how we can ask Apple to investigate further
Please HELP
Correct that the problem started with the installation of ML. However when I disconnect all USB devices, especially my goflex usb 1TB drive it shutsdown fine. Hope they come up with a firmware fix or something.
I disconnected all the devices from usb... notting happened. Just disconnecting HDMI cable permits to shut down. I han no problems with lion, just with ML
Hi guys! I've got the same problem with ML..be aware when you shut down your mac with the power boton, my HD when to total failure by doing this! Got it replace by apple and the mother board too in case it was a faulty! The problem persist at the moment and I've been toll by apple to downgrade to Lion iOS! Not good if you like to be up to date!
I've come across in my case that by disconnecting the HDMI cable or changing the settings of my resolutions it does aloud the mac to shut down, the only problem is that the resolution I have to change to isn't the optimal for my tv so I have to change it everytime I want to use the mac! Not good!
Hope that help!
Same problem here, solved changing my screen resolution. My Mac Mini is connected via HDMI to the television, with 720p it doesn't shut down, with 1080p it works...
Your sure about this. mine is 1080p and it still keeps restarting. If apple says that the macmini does work with Lion/Mountain Lion why the **** am I having this problem? It sends the reports to apple every day yet there is no fix.
Im sure Im not doing it any good forcing quit on the ON/OFF button but its the only way to trn it off
Thanks Paluz, your advice was very useful for me...my Mac mini is connected to the TV via HDMI too: it auto restarts when using 1360x768 (the best for my monitor), it doesn't if I change the resolution before shutting down. Hope Apple will fix this, meanwhile we found a "solution".
My mac mini 2012 is having the same shut down problem. But I found a different way to shut it down. I log in as my self, I go to my log in name on the desktop screen and sign as guest user, I go back to mty name without logging off guest user, then I shut down. It takes far longer to shut down (1 min) but for some reason it just works. My mac mini is also connected to hdmi and has 2 usbs connected to it all the time. I'm just going to wait for the next osx to comeout so I can shut down my mac mini normally again (I assume all files related to shutting down get installed again.)
Also I remebered something weird about my mountain lion upgrade. When it was on the mountain lion screen it was almost done installing, but for some weird reason it showed -2 minutes left, then it restarted the installation.
my mac mini retarts when I have it at 720p.
Force shutdowns are"deadly"for a computer
the mac minis don't come preinstalled with mountain lion, it comes with lion, and the only way to upgrade to mountain lion is by going to the appstore.
Is not shutting down good? I can't find any articles about this. Since the mac mini only uses 10 watts, I don't mind having it on 24/7.

Thanks Paluz, for me was the same. I changed my resolution to 1080dpi and now it shuts down properly.
Anyway it is not good that the problem has not been fixed neither with the 10.8.2 version. Apple is working very bad now.
I hate to spoil your solution but I have gad my screen resolution at 1080 for some time and it still restarts.
