I don't think it has anything to do with Mountain Lion, or at least is not unique to ML. My MacMini (server) does the same thing which is annoying sometimes, i.e having to shut it down twice in a row. I'm running Lion Server on my Mac Mini. I haven't tested it out yet but I have a feeling it might have something to do with the fact that I have the shutdown and startup of my Mac Minin on a schedule. Again, I haven't confirmed this by disabling the shutdown/startup schedule so it's just a guess at this point so I could be totally off regarding that. But it's definitely not unique to the Mac Mini running Mountain Lion.

Im also having this problem, running ML on mac mini 2010.

I rang apple earlier today and he wasn't aware of the problem and asked me to go through various power cycles, with pressing certain buttons on the keyboard when you start the mac, however all were a failure.

He then resorted to resintall ML and said that should fix it but im afraid it hasnt.

Ive got 2 external hard drives, one USB and one Firewire which ive only just installed and the problem is there before i installed that.

there seems to be a recurring theme around USB connections but i think its a deeper more complex issue with the OS.

I have looked into the log as well and it says there was PANIC when the mac was restarting.......

Fingers crossed that apple pick up on this issue and sort it soon.

how did you install it to begin with? did your mac come with it pre-installed? did you buy it on App Store as an upgrade from lion or snow leaopard? it also depends wheather you have updated it to the latest version!

I bought it on app store and made a copy of the original installer for keeps sake so I just reran it ontop of the one I had but you can do a fresh install if you want, it just takes more work.

Hi guys,

It's not the HDMI, it's something with the motherboard or device panel. If you unplug usb devises the proble stops as it does with the HDMI cable unplugged. Apple will hopefully come up with a firmware update or something. Don't let your warranty run out before you take it to Apple to complain. They may not have a real fix for this problem and don't want to have a recall. The system should shutdown with or without devises plugged into the device panel. That's a major problem if we have to unplug something and consider that a fix.

Class Action may be coming at some point if they don't offer a fix.

The motherboard? Mine has been hardly used, just connected to the TV and this never happened in Snow leopard.

I reinstalled mountain lion on mine a few days ago to see if I could correct the problem and it worked normaly for a while, today it started to play up on me again. It wont shut down, keeps rebooting. Can this be a coincidence? I think its Lion/Mountain Lion.

Cant stand this hassle Im going to reinstall snow leopard and let you know if I have further problems. If as you say its the motherboard then there are too many coincidences, too many people having this same problem and Apple isnt confessing something.
