None of the answers so far have made any difference in helping me expose the desktop from all the currently active windows. Windows does it better again, well I guess it "can do it" just by clicking the bottom right rectangle, very straightforward, instead of making us run in circles like mac OS and not arriving anywhere.
It works for all windows of the active application, not all windows for all applications. You didn't make that distiction in your original post.
The command has been the same in all versions of OSX.

Yep I'd say F11 is the best answer to this thread. I had no idea it existed so thank you!
F11 on mac is also better than Windows-M because it puts your work all back in place when you F11 again.
How to reopen just one of the 'minimized' windows after F11 ?
Command+Option+H+M
And more to the point, if F11 is a challenge (e.g. on a Macbook), you can change the shortcut:
System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Mission Control > Show Desktop
