Kernel panics on Mountain Lion are normal?

I made the mistake of upgrading my Mac Pro to Mountain Lion. Since then, I've been plagued by several nasty issues. They are:

  • 4 to 5 kernel panics per day now on average. In the previous 4 years of owning this machine, I'd only seen one total before Mountain Lion.
  • Preferences are not being retained when saved. This is especially maddening in Mail where I have to correct a mail setting every single time it launches (or restarts from a hard freeze/kernel panic)
  • Whenever a kernel panic happens, the contents of my two monitors are swapped. What is supposed to display on the left display jumps to the right display and the contents of the right display move to the left display. This includes menubar, desktop images and my geektool scripts.
  • While not technically a bug, I feel completely mislead by Apple regarding Airplay capabilities. I upgraded solely for this one feature only to learn that my 8-core, 12Gb of RAM, Dual Video Cards and SSD Raid is not sufficient to utilize this feature. This is incredibly dishonest marketing on Apple's part.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I'm leaning towards reverting back to Lion and askin

Not a bad plan, but three consecutive crashes in under 15 minutes gave me another idea - uninstall Flash completely and see if that fixes the problem. And, as with your recommendation to use Chrome, YouTube is more than happy to present an HTML5-based version of any video when Flash isn't available at all... I'll come back and post my results in the next couple of days...

Just a FYI - I finally had a crash after weeks of being crash free since my replacement video card was installed.

I now have a single Radion HD 5770 card driving three dual dvi monitors.

I think the crash was likely due to audio drivers as I opened up a rarely used recording program (and it started to auopt update) and heard that tick-tick-tick that happens if you have any audio running just before a crash.

Not greatly concerned - I did not grab the stack report as I was in a hurry to get back to a weinar I was trying to participate in at the time. I did however note that the stack was nothing but apple from top to bottom.

My experience since the upgrade is that I can keep my machine up for about a week at a time (thanks to 'purge' and a daily restart of Safari) after which memory (swap) starts grinding it to a halt. This is about the spot I was in 2 OS upgrades ago (and the trigger point for all the upgrading in the first place).

So I'm writing this crash off as an anomoly and just letting everyone know that you want to upgrade your video card(s) as the fastet path to peace on this matter from what I can see.

Unless something changes significantly I'll likely not be heard from again now...

Glad to hear of your success with the replacement card, I'd love to do something similar if I could justify the cost at this point.

Sadly, after uninstalling Flash and going several days without a crash, I had another one just a few minutes ago. So it appears that Flash greatly exacerbates the problem but isn't exclusively the culprit (on my system at least).

Let me update you about my MBP. I had to place it back in its original configuration (I had to split my fusion drive!!; re-install everything on the HD; re-install the optical bay). Then, my Apple Retailer asked Apple for mother card replacement. This was first refused by Apple because, when they received the request, my MBP was bought 3 years and 3 days ago: I could then negociate with Apple and they finally accepted to do the mother card replacement. I then re-installed my fusion drive.

Now, it has been 24hrs without KP. I keep my finger crossed!!!!

At any rate, while all the process has been a pain in the neck, I wish to thank you for your great help!!

Best

If I were in your shoes, I would nevertheless give a try. In my case, this was easier since the deadline was over by 3 days only. But, if you are lucky, if you are nice, and talk the right person, this might work...It's worth trying. My MBP is not having any KP since they replaced its mother card...(before, I was experiencing somtimes up to 4-5 KPs per day!!)

The 6.2 model came out in April of 2010 - are you within three years of purchase?

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU

If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.

Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):          com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000          com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal(6.4.0)@0x83c05000->0x84019fff             dependency: com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000          com.apple.NVDAResman(6.4.0)@0x834a0000->0x8378dfff             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(2.6.5)@0x7a802000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IONDRVSupport(2.2.1)@0x82fd3000             dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily(2.2.1)@0x8301b000

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…

So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.

Good luck,

Clinton

Well since the upgrade to mavericks my kernal panics have stopped. This is very stable OS like lion was. Loving it right now. Oh for anyone using photoshop and it hangs just rest your PS and it will take a while to reboot. Let it run and you'll be good.
