Kernel panics on Mountain Lion are normal?

I made the mistake of upgrading my Mac Pro to Mountain Lion. Since then, I've been plagued by several nasty issues. They are:

  • 4 to 5 kernel panics per day now on average. In the previous 4 years of owning this machine, I'd only seen one total before Mountain Lion.
  • Preferences are not being retained when saved. This is especially maddening in Mail where I have to correct a mail setting every single time it launches (or restarts from a hard freeze/kernel panic)
  • Whenever a kernel panic happens, the contents of my two monitors are swapped. What is supposed to display on the left display jumps to the right display and the contents of the right display move to the left display. This includes menubar, desktop images and my geektool scripts.
  • While not technically a bug, I feel completely mislead by Apple regarding Airplay capabilities. I upgraded solely for this one feature only to learn that my 8-core, 12Gb of RAM, Dual Video Cards and SSD Raid is not sufficient to utilize this feature. This is incredibly dishonest marketing on Apple's part.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I'm leaning towards reverting back to Lion and askin

That's exactly it.

Last night I went ahead and wiped my main drive (although I kept the SSD RAID). A fresh and completely stock install of Mountain Lion still exhibits the same issues. Although the UI is a little snappier, which is nice. I'm now running no 3rd-party software on a clean install with a freshly wiped drive. Aside from Adobe's CS6 and Office, there's no non-Apple software on the thing.

I'm still suffering from Mail not persisting settings. If I make a change, the old value is back when I start the app again.

The kernel panics seem to be related to Safari and specifically to plug-in use. Most kp's happen when using a combination of safari and the flash plug-in. But I just had one while watching a netflix movie (i.e. silverlight). The error logs support this with mentions of Nvidia Geforce in the logs.

Anytime I try to play a movie on netflix now, I'm told to reinstall the plug-in on both Safari and Chrome.

The fresh install seems to have addressed the issue of swapping the contents of my displays. (The stuff on the right display would be moved to the left display and the contents of the left move to the right. This includes desktop backgrounds).

I can't boot into safe mode.

I did make myself a bootable usb flash drive with the Mountain Lion installer. It's given me a recovery/repair option that because of my SSD RAID, I couldn't have normally. I'd totally recommend this.

Hey Carl. Today i purchase an account on netflix and i had to install aswell the silverslight plug in. After i finished watching a movie i used a little bit more but all of a sudden my mac freezed for the first time since i bought it last year. I have a macbook pro 13" i5 mid 2011. I had no alternity than rather press for a long time the power botton. When the mac turned on and started loading it began to write: panic(etc. Etc...). Not only that but also it started doing pip pip pip (3bips). Now i had to eliminate all my work because after restalling mountain lion it continued workong wrong... Hope that this time that i had to format my mac will work....

Exactly the same kernel panic received today on my MacPro4,1.

I had the same problem as you on a mac pro I use at work. The machine has dual Nvidia GT120 cards, each driving one monitor. I would get as many as 3-4 kernel panics in a day.

Two days ago, I changed my config so one video card drives both monitors (and the other card is idle), and this fixed my issue - not a kernel panic since. I did have to get a mini-dp to dvi converter though.

Sep 4, 2012 12:15 PM in response to Lawrence T.

I'm having the same problems with my Early 2008 Mac Pro with a GeForce GTX 285 and a GeForce GT 120. I installed updated nVidia CUDA and drivers, although it hasn't helped.

It seems that Mac Pro users with 2 video cards seem to be running into this problem. I'm going to try unplugging my 3rd monitor and putting my other two monitors on a single card to see if that solves the issue.

Sep 6, 2012 11:29 PM in response to Carl Sieber

OK!

I finally got some answers.
I just recieved this reply from NVDIA:

This issue seems to be due to wrong driver.

I am sorry to inform you that till date there is no NVIDIA driver for MAC MOUNTAIN LION version. Both NVIDIA and MAC are working on this issue. Soon there will be a supported driver, but at present we can not comment on the releasing approximate date.

Thank you for contacting NVIDIA Customer Care.

Thanks William but I don't think it's that simple.

Just because a card is supported doesn't mean a bug hasn't appeared somewhere along the way for certain configurations (like multi-card, multi-display machines). This is a new OS afterall, bugs will be found. My hunch is that the problem is specifically coming from Apple's drivers for my factory NVidia cards. Everytime I have a kernal panic, I see the same NVidia mentions in the issue log. Every single time. To Jinx's point, I'd sure hope Apple and Nvidia were working together to resolve the issue regardless of who's actually to blame.

Sep 10, 2012 8:10 PM in response to rmiller88

Just to add some more data ... a previous poster mentioned that using only a single graphics card stopped the kernel panics. I turned off one of my 3 monitors, and connected the remaining two to one of my graphics cards (the GTX 285). My GT 120 is now left with nothing connected to it.

I was getting 1-3 kernel panics per day, but I haven't had a single one in the 5 days since I stopped using both graphics cards.

I can't guarantee that my problems are solved, but it seems likely. It is annoying to need to turn off one of the graphics cards, but much less annoying than dealing with the kernel panics!!! Hopefully this will all be fixed in 10.8.2

Sep 11, 2012 4:08 PM in response to rmiller88

I would have 1 or 2 panics a year using prior versions of the OS. Since upgrading to ML I have 1 a day.
