Kernel panics on Mountain Lion are normal?

I made the mistake of upgrading my Mac Pro to Mountain Lion. Since then, I've been plagued by several nasty issues. They are:

  • 4 to 5 kernel panics per day now on average. In the previous 4 years of owning this machine, I'd only seen one total before Mountain Lion.
  • Preferences are not being retained when saved. This is especially maddening in Mail where I have to correct a mail setting every single time it launches (or restarts from a hard freeze/kernel panic)
  • Whenever a kernel panic happens, the contents of my two monitors are swapped. What is supposed to display on the left display jumps to the right display and the contents of the right display move to the left display. This includes menubar, desktop images and my geektool scripts.
  • While not technically a bug, I feel completely mislead by Apple regarding Airplay capabilities. I upgraded solely for this one feature only to learn that my 8-core, 12Gb of RAM, Dual Video Cards and SSD Raid is not sufficient to utilize this feature. This is incredibly dishonest marketing on Apple's part.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I'm leaning towards reverting back to Lion and askin

If anyone can make sense of this, here is my log file. It apparently was working ok until I used SIRI on Skype and then it stopped again.

So Ive had two more panics they seem to happen in clusters with periods of calm. Again it was whilst watching video (flash), I have had a look around and a few threads have mentioned Perian possibly being a cause - I have now unistalled this (it is apparantly not compatible with ML). Also I didnt have this installed but Flip4Mac is another app that apparantly is no longer compatible.

Try unistalling these and see what happens.

Just had another panic on start up - first time ever! now I really have no idea. Panic says it was graphics related again.

Any news on drivers?

Oct 1, 2012 5:55 PM in response to Carl Sieber

So I just received a call from my Apple Tech with a "solution" to the issue. Apparently, they've decided that the RAM in my machine has decided to go bad in perfect unison with my upgrade to Mountain Lion.

So while I'm suspicious of their hypothesis, my only course of action at this point is to start pulling the RAM from my machine and wait for the kernel panics to appear. I'm pretty dissappointed with the outcome of their investigation, especially when it essentially means Apple has pretty much shrugged off any responsibility for helping my solve this issue with Mountain Lion.

At this point, I'm wondering if I should downgrade back to Lion if I get too tired of the crashes or try to stick it out.

Carl,

I wouldn't go this route at all. I have been working with Aaron Rose from Apple and I can tell you this, They have no idea what it is. I am having the same problem and Apple tome my cards we bad, After several diagnostics and change of the card at apples exspense the problem is the same. We have come to determine that the problem is with the dual card configuration itself. I took one of the cards out and operated on a single for a week and not a single reboot. I then inserted the other and removed the one I was using for for a few and still no panics again. The only time I started to reboot again is when the dual cards were running at the same time. To go a step further we went and found 2 nvidia cards retail and installed and updated them with the drivers from the Nvidia site with the links i sent you. Running both those cards with the driver updates and not a single reboot.

I have since gone back to lion on my primary machine.

The problem isn't your machine it's the OS Drivers for the cards

Oct 2, 2012 8:07 AM in response to Carl Sieber

Am having exactly the same problem ever since "upgrading" to mountain lion. I get frequent kernal panics (I hadn't even seen one before with any previous OS). I've spent ages trawling through forums to find out what's wrong. Have tried resetting my PRAM, repairing disk permissions, repairing disk, doing a clean install and finally erasing HD and a clean install. I have absolutely no other software on my mac and yet it is still unstable.

I'm running 10.8.2 on a 15" MBP (mid 2010), 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5. 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3.

Anyone any idea? I don't want to throw a spanner in the works on this thread by including my panic report just in case its not exactly the same problem.

Thanks,

Oct 2, 2012 10:03 AM in response to Apple Bobber

Hey

Yeah it sounds like the same/similiar problem. Through a very slow process I think I have narrowed it down to OpenGL. When I run in safe mode the system never crashes (safe mode does not use open gl), I have a few games on steam (some which require opengl and others which do not). The ones I can use without opengl never crash my system and the others which do use opengl always crash my system. I have unistalled and reinstalled every bit of software on my system and have had crashes with them installed and without.

I downloaded GLview (app store) and everything on there is currently up to date. I would guess, as has been said before that we need an update to the graphics drivers.

I would like to go back to trusty lion but Im not sure how to retrograde back to an older osx any ideas?

Oct 5, 2012 1:27 AM in response to Urbansledger

I thought about "retrograding" back to Snow Leopard too but thought I'd have it checked out in an Apple store first. Turns out there's a known issue with some NVidia graphics cards that shipped with my model and I need to get the logic board replaced. I asked the guy if I could just go back to the old OS and he said that would not fix the problem and its kind of a coincidence that the issue cropped up now at exactly the same time I switched to ML.

Oct 5, 2012 3:56 PM in response to Apple Bobber

Let me just say whats really going on and straight to the point. ML was not tested long enough and with enough hardware to be prepared for a proper release. I have spoken with support and have recieve every excuse under the sun which is common for people in the industry when they don't want to look like the bad guy. This is not a joke. We have 149 Mac Pros in out prodiction center and all have the same configuration, the Kernal Panics are occurung on every machine since the install of ML. Apples final word to use was it was a video card issue. Through various test we been able to find the problem in our systems being one of ML having issues with TWO video cards being installed in one system. Apple keeps talking a bunch of poo poo and saying anything they can to point this the other direction. We have since all gone back to lion and not a single issue has opccured. Apple needs to quit rushing the development of Mac OS. Yes Nvidia graphic cards are having issues with the OS and if you bought your Video card after market and can download the new drivers from Nvidia directly that were just posted september 19 2012 your problem with dual video card kernal panics should go away. If not and it came with the system like Carl and I you are screwed till Apple gets a update out to correct the problems. Carl said he updated to 10.8.2 with no luck. Looks like 10.8.3 will be the prayer on the list. Nvidia has an issue in ML and apple is sweeping it under the rug till they find a fix. Go back to lion till they actually release the fix would be my advice.

Today I received another panic type related to com.apple.NVDAResman/GeForce.

Currently I'm on 10.8.2 (patch1 - so the very latest version)

I had Safari open on Monitor 2 (Apple GT120 Card) and Mail open on Monitor 1 (GeForce 560TI448 Retail).

Informed apple.

Oct 9, 2012 5:28 PM in response to Dogcow-Moof

Well since the average video editor uses three monitors for editing and since the avarege graphics professional uses there as well they obviously didn't test for at least three monitors for the pros. To drive the point even more so: The release of the MacBook Pro with thunderbolt made it possible for two external monitors to be connected for a total of three working monitors, So if they are relasing for three monitor capibilities why would they not test for it? This is the standard they are trying to relay to the public! This is a screw up plain and simple.

Oct 10, 2012 7:53 AM in response to Carl Sieber

This problem totally *****. I run my own business and am losing major productivity by this crash, which presents multiple times per work day. I wish I could bill Apple for the money I am losing by this horrible, buggy, turd of an OS.

I am losing a lot of faith in Apple. I understand that OS upgrades have bugs here and there but a 12 year old OS should not start kernel panicking on updates. That's just shoddy workmanship.

Kernel panics on Mountain Lion are normal?
