Kernel panics on Mountain Lion are normal?

I made the mistake of upgrading my Mac Pro to Mountain Lion. Since then, I've been plagued by several nasty issues. They are:

  • 4 to 5 kernel panics per day now on average. In the previous 4 years of owning this machine, I'd only seen one total before Mountain Lion.
  • Preferences are not being retained when saved. This is especially maddening in Mail where I have to correct a mail setting every single time it launches (or restarts from a hard freeze/kernel panic)
  • Whenever a kernel panic happens, the contents of my two monitors are swapped. What is supposed to display on the left display jumps to the right display and the contents of the right display move to the left display. This includes menubar, desktop images and my geektool scripts.
  • While not technically a bug, I feel completely mislead by Apple regarding Airplay capabilities. I upgraded solely for this one feature only to learn that my 8-core, 12Gb of RAM, Dual Video Cards and SSD Raid is not sufficient to utilize this feature. This is incredibly dishonest marketing on Apple's part.

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I'm leaning towards reverting back to Lion and askin

By the looks of the crash report, you have the exact same crashes as I do with a very similar machine (two GT120's)... The driver update from Nvidia helped my system a little, but I still had crashes. I've resorted to running both of my displays off of one single card. That's resolved the issue for me so far.

I've also had a running dialog with an Apple Tech (Lauren) about the issue. She first had me pulling RAM and other unhelpful steps that wasted a ton of my time to no avail. She did email me about the driver update release, but hasn't given an explanation for the issue or any further resolution. She's since stopped responding to my emails asking for an update... So yeah. I wish I had a better update on the situation.

Yet Another Crash

Not qwuite daily for me but up to 5 in one day at times.

Never had a single crash that was not 100% com.apple.whatever... all down the stack trace

I can tell you this from observation (and as a softeare developer for 30 years I've learned to watch for patterns)

If you WANT to trigger this, at least on my machine, open as many HTML5(ish) interfaces as you can in tabs in the browser. Facebook, Twitter, Empire Avenu (in paritcular), Google Maps, Google Docs, while running iTunes in the background. (Hey NORMAL behaviour right?)

Do solid transactions on one of those screens for about 30 mintes. BOOM 😟

How do I know this?

I'm currently trying (key word here is trying...) to build an HTML5(ish) interface so every time I come up to an interface test phase it's ****. Crash, crash, crash crash...

Now I just get up and walk away form the computer and take a break - I don't think Apple has a right to destroy my health as they destroy my business.

It took me over 6 months to move my dev enviroment over to Apple from Windows (it's a very VERY complex Eclipse setup). WHy did I move? Apple was the only stable alternative at the time.

This is the first time in MY history that I have a failing machien and it stared teh moment I moved to Mountian Lion. (If it walks like duck and quasks like a duck...)

I would throw the $35K I need for a new machine (yes I work on BIG stuff) at Apple but I would hate to reward them for incompetenace. That was what Windows was all about- release an unstabnle product first, take the money then sell promise to fix it.

I fear Apple has moved to the dark side and is doing the same to the Apple community. Release fast and furious and make money on upgrades and from customer frustation.

So if I do move at this point it will be to Linux or BSD and Apple can go defrag themsevles 🙂

Second crash today:

I can add listening to tunes via a web browser (which requries some HTML5(ish) tech also triggers this behaviour. I had a number of Ajax enabled sites up at the time - including twitter as I tweet each and every crash moving forward. Hashtags are not hard to find.

I see Apple admin is removing my requests for tweet activity to support getting this fixed.

I've just picked up a Mac Mini that I'm going to deticate to PROVING this is a APPLE problem an no one elses.

Will run full diags first of course. Then install Mountain Lion and not a scrap of non-apple software - then I'll make it crash in under 30 minutes.

If you do succeed in crashing it, please make thorough notes of how you do it, and submit the bug to Apple.

Please remember that this is a user forum, and while people here are usually sympathetic to others' issues and try to help, we are all just users, and cannot fix problems in the OS.

Apple can, but they are much more likely to do it when given proper information via the proper channels.

I have submitted a few bugs via bugreport.apple.com and they did not go unnoticed.

For what it is worth- since reducing my my iMAc 27's total RAM to 16 GB from 20 GB (I removed the two original 2GB chips) I have not had ONE, not ONE kernel Panic crash. My iMac is working flawlessly again and has been since I removed this ram a few weeks ago. So it is either too much ram or a flawed 2GB chip in my case that was causing the crashes.

I am happily working with 16 GB of ram ( 2 x 8BG chips) so I will pursue this no further.

All my problems began when I upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I'm good to go now. Even the Apple Authorized Store near me could not solve this problem for me after testing my machine for a week.

I'm afraid the 10.8.3 update did nothing to fix the "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand" problem.

Have had 2 panics today:

I filed a bug with Apple last night and it was closed as a duplicate today.

Not sure when the dupllcate bug ID, 13424078, was submitted. But apparently Apple is aware of the issue.

I would encourage everyone here who is experiencing the "IOGMD: not wired for the IODMACommand" kernel panic caused by multiple NVIDIA cards in a Mac Pro to submit a bug to http://bugreport.apple.com/. You can basically use my bug as a reference. You may want to include a statement at the end of it that mentions that your submission is likely a duplicate of Bug ID #13424078. Maybe the more submissions they have regarding this issue, the higher priority it will receive.

Guys, I'm sick and tired of this kernel panics. I'm considering buying new memory cards for my macbook pro. But before I go on puting money on it, could someone take a look on my report and tell me if it's worth even trying?

Thanks a lot 😀
