playing .avi on macs

Hi,

I am trying to play an .avi file on the macbook pro (v.10.4.5). I tried using Quicktime and Windows Media Player. However, both programs apparently do not support this file type. I downloaded divx but when I open the movie with windows media player, wmp says that it cannot play the file because the file format is invalid. Apparently, Quicktime does not understand .avi files so that's why I tried wmp. Also, Flip4Mac didn't work because the program can't be installed on intel based hardware.

This particular .avi movie plays on windows just fine so I doubt the file is corrupted.

Does anyone know how to play .avi's on the new macbookpros?

Thanks,
Michelle

Quicktime does understand the avi format but the avi in questiion may have been encoded with a codec not yet available for the Intel Macs.
With regard to Windows Media Player, the Mac version only plays ASF and WMV files, in contrast to the Windows version, which does play avi and mpegs.
You could try this alternative video player, although the only versions available for Intel Macs at present appear to be beta versiions. VLC

Technically, all version of VLC are beta thus the 0.8.4 version number...
