Memory Stick Problem

I have a Toshiba 16 GB memory stick and had copied items on there successfully. Now it shows me that international no sign in white when I try to drag an itme into it. The items all open correctly and there is almost 5 GB left on it. The trash has been emptied as well. I have a second one that works correctly. What is going on and how can I fix it?

Thanks.

Is this flash drive one you've always used with your Mac or have you been using it with Windows? I ask because the standard Windows disk format is NTFS which a Mac can read from but cannot write to. If you want to use the drive for Macs and Windows it should be formatted exFAT.

Also, what you are describing might be a locked drive. Most of my flash drives don't have this feature but I do have one which has a little switch I can flip that renders the drive read only until I flip it back.

I do not recall installing any security software. If I DID, what do I do? I will also paste in the screen shot of the Toshiba site that seems to say there is no software for it as I have a Transmemory Security Software that is shown in this shot (the white one that has 64 on it only mine is 16). You can see the download options for others but nothing next to mine. I use a Mac and tried to download security software only to come up with .exe files.

Look for a small slide lock somewhere on the drive. I have several smaller flash drives that have a small slide lock. On some they are not obvious. Maybe you closed it accidently.

Are you adding your files diretly to the root directory of the flash drive? If so FAT formatted drives have a limit of the number of files independent of file size that can be added to the root directory. Put all of the files in a folder on the drive and you can fill it up to the limit.

I see you have posted another topic about this previously with no result.

Consider this solution. Copy the data off the drive and reformat the drive in Disk Utility.

Also as you have previously said you have nothing to do with windows, there is no need to have the USB drive in MSDOS format. Choose instead the Mac OS Extended format.

Once reformatted, copy your stuff back on to it.

If it cannot successfully be reformatted, then dispence with it as being defective hardware.

I looked at it using an eye loup and cannot see anything resembling a slide lock. It used to work although my memory recalls this happening once before and it got solved. I wish I had written it down. It is a Toshiba 64 MB Transmemory stick. Out of curiosity, do you happen to own one in this line? If you do, maybe you could tell me where the slide would bt. It is a mystery.

Thanks.
