I was having this problem on a iMac running 10.8.2 and came here to research the issue. Then it hit me when I saw somthing about an authentication error . . . I am running Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Mac & Little Snitch. I turned them both off and tried to run software update again and immediately got a good result. Update run with no further problem. Hope this helps someone out.

I frequently have this problem - NSURL errordomain -1012. It's been a problem off and on for months and months, but mostly for the update action. I can get to apple.com and I can download OS updates manually. Here's what puzzles me: Looking back through the posts on this problem going back to 2011, I find many proposed solutions -- many but ot all having to do with DNS. But some were "fixed" with date corrections and others were told that it was a problem with Apple servers, just wait and it will clear. In fact one of the Apple "gurus" told me this.

I've tried them all and so far -- no joy. 😟 In addition, I have yet to see a definittive explaination of the root cause. Has anyone seen an Apple tech bulletin?
