Installing OS 9.2.2 on 1Ghz Titanium G4 Powerbook

I have a G4 Titanium Powerbook 1 Ghz that is running OSX 10.4.5. I need to install OS 9.2.2, but I do not have the original install disk. I have been told by Apple (and on this forum) that I must have the original machine specific disk to install OS 9.2.2 on this powerbook. (I have tried other ones and they do not work) I have been watching Ebay with no success. Can anyone tell me where I might find (for purchase) the original OS 9.2.2 install disk that is specific for this machine? Apple does not have them for sale. Also, I do not want to run in Classic mode.

Hi, Chuck. I can confirm that only the original Install/Restore DVD will meet your need for a bootable OS 9.2.2 installation on your Powerbook. Given that you own the Powerbook, it seems you are clearly entitled to have that disc or a duplicate of it, and I'm disappointed to hear that Apple can no longer supply one. Under those circumstances, I doubt that anyone (including Apple) would object to someone's burning a duplicate disc for you. I would offer to do it myself, but I have neither the software nor the know-how to do it. I've never tried to duplicate a DVD, let alone a bootable Mac OS X installer DVD, which is as special a case as any.

If you have access to an area Mac users' group, there might be someone in it who knows how to to this and has access to the needed disc. Discussing the procedure in these forums would be inappropriate: one couldn't expect Apple to host detailed instructions that could easily be used to pirate their other OS DVDs, as well as to duplicate the one you need.

For the record, the disc you need duplicated is grey with white lettering, and bears the inscription:

Powerbook G4 15 Inch
Software Install and Restore
Mac OS X version 10.2.3
Mac OS version 9.2.2
DVD version 1.0
691-4316-A (This is Apple's part number for the disc, and distinguishes it conclusively from all other similar-looking discs)

There was also an Apple Hardware Test CD shipped with your Powerbook model:

Apple Hardware Test
Powerbook G4
SW version 1.2.3
691-4076-A

Personally, I've found the Hardware Test to be pretty ineffectual. If AHT finds a problem, you can generally believe what it says. But if it doesn't find any problem, it is emphatically NOT safe to assume there isn't one. Therefore, I wouldn't worry about getting a duplicate of that disc if I were you.

You may want to try phoning any or all of the following Powerbook specialty shops and seeing whether any of them has, or would burn, a duplicate Install/Restore DVD for you:
