I have a problem with NEC DVD_RW ND-3540A when leave the dvd or cd inside the unit for minutes the finder crashed i have to restart the G5

Try disabling "Put hard disk to sleep ..." in System Preferences - Energy Saver as this might have an impact on certain optical drives.
