shumi,

Since the Wallstreet does no have built-in FireWire ports, no FireWire drivers are installed.

If you go to the Apple menu (upper left corner) > Control Panels > Extensions Manager, then go down the list in Extensions, you probably will not see these three extensions:

FireWire CardBus Enabler
FireWire Enabler
FireWire Support

If perchance they are present but unchecked, check the boxes and then restart.

If they are missing, there are several options for acquiring these extensions.

1. Download the MacOS 9.2.2 Update and run it on top of your already-installed 9.2.2; with the FireWire PC card in the card slot, the installer will see the FireWire hardware and install the FW Enabler and FW Support but not the necessary FW CardBus Enabler because it is not in the Update.

2. Download the FireWire CardBus Enabler file here; you should have as part of your software Stuffit Expander to expand the downloaded .sit file...it will probably expand automatically.

3. Once the downloaded Enabler file is on the desktop, open your HD icon where you will see a folder called System Folder...just drag the Enabler file on top of the System Folder icon and it will automatically be properly placed. I just downloaded this file and it has only a generic icon (plain piece of paper with folded corner) but the file still works fine. I will have to work on generating the custom icon.

4. If you have already run the 9.2.2 Update, you should now have all three extensions; restart and test.

If your Wallstreet is like mine, you must place the FireWire PC card in the 'book and perform a restart (or cold start); otherwise the FW PC card will not be recognized...the card itself is not hot-swappable under 9.x.

P.S. Please use lower-case letters; upper-case is harder to read and is considered shouting.

shumi,

Do you have a FireWire PC card icon on the desktop? This indicates the powerbook sees the PC card and has mounted it. This does not, however, guarantee the FireWire PC card is good or that the FireWire software is working properly.

Have you fully inserted the PC card? If necessary, place a hand opposite the PC card on the other side of the powerbook so you can push very hard. You should hear a snap as it locks in place. If properly installed, you should be able to eject the card with the buttons next to the 'tab' key over the PC card slot, or you can drag the PC card icon to the Trash.

Please describe what FireWire device you are trying to use? If a 3.5" HD, it should have its own power supply. If a portable 2.5" HD, it may not have a power adapter. See if it has a small port for a power brick.

Yes, the 1.0 Enabler will work fine.

shumi,

If there is no FireWire PC card icon on the desktop (usually under the HD icon), then the card is not mounting.

- Is this a new FireWire PC card?

- Can you provide a link or name and number of the card?

- Does the card properly eject as I have described earlier?

- If you open your Extensions Manager control panel, are the three FireWire extensions present and enabled?

- Have you restarted with the card in the card slot?

- Can you please tell me what FireWire device you are trying to use?

I would also try this:

- Go to your Utilities folder and launch Disk First Aid, select your HD in the window, then click Verify.

- Follow this procedure for rebuilding the desktop file:

shumi,

As we discussed before, if you have no FireWire PC card icon on the desktop, something is wrong with the hardware. Even without any FireWire extensions, the card should still mount on the desktop with a generic PC card icon.

You do have two PC card slots...one on top of the other...try the 'other' slot if you have not done so.

If you still have no PC card icon on the desktop...

- Try your FireWire PC card in another powerbook.
- Take your Wallstreet to a retail computer store and ask to try another FireWire card.
- Try another PC card in the slot to see if it mounts...a modem PC card or FireWire or USB card...anything to see it the powerbook will recognize the presence of a PC card.

Not all PC cards work with Macs. For instance, I've got a USB 2.0/FireWire PC Card that makes my Pismo and Lombard (running Tiger) panic whenever I put them in, and if they don't panic, the entire system becomes highly unstable and the PC card slot is "broken" until I reboot.

If it still doesn't work, I'd suggest selling it on eBay and finding another one.
